Sometimes I check the @xkcd.com Explainer page so I can read the title text on my phone. And sometimes that page is also hilarious. Thank you, anonymous wiki editor. www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.p...
A screencap of the Explainer wiki page for xkcd #3230, Overton. The comic is a single image of a headstone labeled with the name of political scientist Joseph Paul Overton, with several birth and death dates crossed out and reentered—a comedic reference to the concept of the Overton Window viewed as the time its inventor was alive.

The wiki entry below states, “This [effect] creates the ridiculous implication that Overton was living at least four lives simultaneously, or that history has repeatedly changed so that the dates of his life shifted, either of which is impossible.”

After this comment, they helpfully added the traditional wiki request, “CITATION NEEDED.”

Luca Cassidy 💗
Am’s lil black kitten, Luca, whose paws are too big for her body, napping contentedly on the electric blanket. Not pictured: her purr. She’s perfect. We love her. Luca, a smol black kitten with grey whiskers. In this photo she’s rolled over and her grey-gold eyes are open. She’s such a little love. Still purring.

I love living in a small city. First time voting in person since Covid, everyone was lovely, also the first time in my life I’ve EVER gotten a STICKER. My night is made. (Hoping for some good news later on that will make it a lot better. GO SOCIALISM!) 🥰
Me, a white nonbinary person with a currently-out-of-control disconnected-cut quiff of wavy of brown hair pushed to one side. I’m sorry about my hair guys. I’m wearing glasses, a jean jacket and a grey paisley scarf, and I’m standing in front of a nondescript building that is my polling place. Prominently on my jacket is a STICKER that says “I VOTED”. A STICKER!

What’s your sign?
A photo shows a piece of computer paper taped to a lamppost with a street in the background. On the page, someone’s printed out a photo of a Siamese or Tonkinese cat, grey and cream with a brown face, loafing with their tail cozily curled around them, blue eyes gazing out the viewer.

Text above the photo reads
“HAVE YOU SEEN THIS CAT?”
and below the photo, it continues
“CAUSE HE IS FUCKING AWESOME!”

An addendum in smaller print below that clarifies, “He’s not lost or anything, just thought you should see him.”

It’s a great sign.

A cover for Helen Oyeyemi’s excellent short story collection WHAT IS NOT YOURS IS NOT YOURS. The cover is an approximation of a wall in shades of turquoise and blue, with shadow art of a dog on the wall. As we look, we realize the shadow is being thrown by two brown hands extending from the open flames that cover the middle ground of the left half of the cover.

We don’t get to see the person’s face or any part of them except their reaching clasped hands, but there is that rope visible around their wrists or just their sleeves? Slowly, we recognize that this very cute shadow has actually been created by a crushing weight of horror and pain.

(Now imagine stealing this shadow art concept without having to live any of the horror. Reprehensible, right? That’s appropriation, baybee. This cover is art.)

It’s the way my #Spotify #Wrapped “genre evolution” snapshots just reflect which #DnD character’s playlists I was mainlining at the time qlwlkrktjeak

You were really into artists like Saint Mesa, Florence and the Machine, and Hozier.” Abstract green and brown shapes like stems against a black background.Spotify Wrapped 2024 screencap that says “March was your Atmospheric Fantasy Soundtrack season. You listened to artists like Gareth Coker, Daniel Pemberton, and Skunk Anansie.” Features stem- or slide-like green and blue abstract shapes on a black background. #Spotify #Wrapped is out! We are all comparing delightedly. Here’s mine!
Spotify Wrapped 2024 screencap saying I have listened to 82,779 minutes of music this year, which apparently puts me in the top 2% of listeners. The image is abstract, pink and red on a black background. Spotify Wrapped screencap showing my top five artists/bands in 2024:
1. Dessa
2. AFI
3. My Chemical Romance
4. The Mountain Goats
5. Blood Red Shoes
The primary-colored red background is extremely bright. Spotify Wrapped screencap showing my top five songs in 2024:
1. 5 out of 6 - Live (Dessa and the Minnesota Orchestra)
2. Throne (Saint Mesa)
3. Elijah (Blood Red Shoes)
4. Predator (YONAKA)
5. Decoy (Dessa)
The yellow background goes nicely with the turquoise and purple accent colors.

Cover of THE DARK IS RISING by Susan Cooper. It depicts a young person standing on a snow-covered hill in blue and purple night woods under a starry sky, looking up at a looming dark figure on a rearing black horse, which seems to take up half the sky. The art is an illustration style that feels like art animation, bright vivid colors, so much tense, dangerous but hopeful emotion in the brushstrokes (Note: the whole Dark is Rising Sequence is so fucking good.)

A cover design for THE MYTH OF SISYPHUS AND OTHER ESSAYS by Albert Camus. The cover depicts a dark-haired person sitting on a blanket on the edge of a cliff with their legs presumably dangling over the side, holding a dog close to their side, looking down over the black and green hills and pink sky beyond. They are framed by gold leafy weeds growing in the foreground. The effect is hopeful, alarming, peaceful, lonely, courageous—something you infuse your own meaning into (which is the point).

The cover of LAST EXIT by Max Gladstone. The green and grey cover art features a cityscape turned on its side along the spine, with a whirling vortex in the sky above it. The rest of the sky is dark, black on the opposite side of the cover. The effect is grim.

Daelen, any pronouns. Goth villain antifashion queen. Enjoys sarcasm, lists, harnessing the power of an ancient chaos god, and their idiot friends' continual melodrama. Super does not have a secret collection of the best contraband they’ve seized for the king. Definitely judging you for those shoes.
A picrew of Dae, a Triton aberrant mind sorcerer with soft blue skin, pink hair pulled back in a bun, webbed ears, and tiny freckles across the bridge of their nose. They’re wearing black lace, old lady glasses, and a little cameo pin with a skull. Their smirk says they definitely know more than you. When they cast Raulothim’s Psychic Lance and what really happens is that they glare judgmentally over their glasses and the recipient disintegrates from sheer shame. That’s canon. They’re an asshole and I love them.

Lysander Euphorian Grim, professor emeritus, University of Colorado (DEFINITELY a real place). DO call them Xan! A kind mad scientist who keeps poisons & tea in the same kit and daydreams about miniature suns. Will ALWAYS push the big red button. Don’t ask about the necklace. Or why they talk to it.
A picrew (credit: brightgoat) of Xan, who has pale skin, extremely messy short black hair, black eyes, and a half-smile that suggests either delight or heartache. They are wearing all black and have a number of piercings (my goth beloved). Peeking out from their jacket is a blue pendant which may or may not contain the suspended soul of their partner. They’re holding a pen and have a backup pencil behind one ear. Definitely ready for ill-advised Science! 🥰

Finch—he’ll NEVER tell you his full name—a skatepunk anarchist divination wizard. Human…maybe fey too. Genius, anxious, trans, great at connecting people/bad at the spotlight, reluctant leader of a coming revolution. A sweetheart who’ll go frm neutral good to true neural FAST if you hurt his friends
A picrew of my character Finch—he’s a young, somewhat femme guy with messy red hair, green eyes, fair skin and freckles. He’s wearing a brown traveling coat with a button-down underneath, and has asymmetric earrings with a sun on one side and a moon on the other. Glasses, of course, because he’s a nerd. He’s holding a book and standing in front of bookshelves. There’s a flipped coin in the air above his thumb, meant to signify his ability to pull at fate when it counts. He’s smiling just a little, like he knows something we don’t. The little shit. I love him. (Picrew credit: brightgoat)

Three of swords card from the Wild Unknown tarot deck. Three swords tied together or pierced through a winding of red string rather than an anatomical heart, implying heartbreak but also being trapped by heartbreak. The image is all black/white/grey except for the red string. It’s a striking image and metaphor.

Panel 2: he looks quite delighted next to a sheet that says “Adorable bunny figurine that is definitely not a monster”

Panel 3: he looks diabolically gleeful next to a sheet that says, in a much larger font: “ALSO: STAIRS”

Panel 4: he turns to this third sheet with a face that says, very clearly, “what the actual fuck”

Absolute emotional high point of every game of Stardew Valley and this time I made the mistake of using the name of a cat I still really, really miss I’m not crying you’re crying
A screencap of a Stardew Valley farm, fruit and other trees on green pixel grass. A farmer with brown hair, a long skirt and combat boots stands with their back to the viewer, looking toward a little grey stripey cat who is blithely stepping across the field. The text box in the image reads “Jonas loves you 💗”.

In a little game surprisingly full of big moments, the moment when your pet loves you back is hands down the biggest one. <3

I’ve been working from home all week bc I’m sick. Today we had a meeting I had to be on camera for. Mia tapped herself as Meeting Cat & spent the entire time on camera too. My boss’s boss made a joke about Take Your Cat To Work Day & someone was VERY DISPLEASED to learn that this is not a thing
Mia, a stripey brown, grey and cream-colored tabby with dark, almost black markings on her face, a broad lion nose, and striking green eyes. Behind her is my out-of-focus living room, including half-organized bookcase and one of the front windows. On October 7, Hamas launched violent attacks on Israel, and Israel has since responded with violent attacks on the Gaza Strip, a bloody escalation of a conflict that has persisted for generations. The Onion tells you what you need to know about what's happening in Israel and Gaza.

Q: Where is the Gaza Strip?
A: Don't worry about it. It won't exist by the end of the week.

Q: How has the media approached the conflict?
A: Swiftly and irresponsibly.

Q: How many people have died?
A: That depends on whether you count
Palestinian deaths as well.THE ONION - “ISRAEL AND GAZA” Infographic
page 2, 9/15/2023
—

Q: Am I allowed to be sad for all of the victims?
A: Absolutely not. You have to pick a side.

Q: What's been the international response?
A: People across the world have contributed an outpouring of infographics.

Q: How has the United States responded?
A: U.S. leaders reminded Americans that their nation has a responsibility to be a frothing worshipper at the altar of death.THE ONION - “ISRAEL AND GAZA” Infographic
page 3, 9/15/2023
—

Q: How is Israel working to avoid civilian casualties?
A: Civilians in Gaza are being given the opportunity to be driven out of their homeland forever.

Q: Where can I learn more?
A: This is a logistically and morally complex situation involving decades of recent history and thousands of years of context, so try your cousin's Instagram stories.

Q: What lessons should I take from this conflict?
A: That dehumanization begets dehumanization, terror begets terror, and none of us will be free until all of us are free; or, you know, that it might be easier to just look away.

Here’s a moment of kindness in your feed. Cozy cat bed, emptied of the stuff packed in it when we moved. (We used every container we had lol…how’d we even get that many loose cords!?) Harper’s snuggled up in it for the first time in our new home. Day 5 of antibiotics & he’s feeling so much better 💗
A round grey cat bed shaped like an open egg or a giant hood, or an astronaut helmet with the visor open. It’s super fuzzy and soft inside. There’s a black tuxedo kitty snuggled up inside it. He looked up at exactly the right second, so his sleepy green eyes are focused right at the camera. A fluffy boi in a fluffy hiding spot.

Repost with your vibes today
Art: A set of spooky, glowing eyes under short, messy hair peers out of a grey lake strewn with lily pads. In front of them, a yellow and violet sky is framed by a treeline—a reflection on the surface of the lake—while the background fades into twilight. The grassy brush on the foreground shore looks a lot like the creature’s hair.

This is definitely some sort of very tired water goblin, checking to see if the coast is clear

Today Getting To Know Your Neighborhood, part two! There are some great little gardens near our flat. This is just one moment in a series them that I’ll have to grab photos of before harvest time. Even in the block from the nearest bus stop to our building, there’s so much you can’t see in a car 🌺🍃
A huge spray of yellow flowers flourish out in an inverse cone from a single stem growing out of a space in the sidewalk. The gold blooms against the dark green leaves against the grey asphalt and the rainy grey sky, it’s a beautiful combination. A few houses across the street in the background… the red one all the way in the far distance is mine.A close-up of the same gold flowers against their dark green leaves. Up close, you can see that most of the flowers just are a little overblown, as befits an early fall day. But in the foreground at the top of the image is one bud that hasn’t bloomed yet.

Today in Getting To Know Your New Neighborhood: I took public transport to work and back! First time I’ve ever had access to it, so super cool. Here are photos of some of the great #StreetArt I saw today 😍
A brightly colored tile mural of and white red flowers on a blue background. The tiles are all cut in different shapes and fit together like a mosaic. It’s an older piece that must have taken a lot of people some time to make. The tiles are worn down or missing in a few places, but it’s still incredibly beautiful work. It’s located under an overpass in a park by the river.A beautifully detailed monarch butterfly painted on a grey stone background, surrounded by painted yellow flowers. The oranges in the wings of the butterfly are all a little different, mixed with yellows and pinks. This is painted on the concrete wall right behind the last bus stop on my side of the river.Two-thirds of a giant mural that covers most of a building in downtown Albany. A vibrant Black girl with a pink Afro, a sky blue top and spring green shorts sits cross-legged in a garden full of sunflowers. A butterfly is poised on her outstretched hand. There’s a swirl of purple magic around them both. Four stories of windows abut the mural on the left side of the frame. Unfortunately the bus window’s glare cuts in front of the art and the right third of the mural is out of frame. There’s a sense of movement and vivid joy in this piece, balanced by the confidence and stillness of the moment depicted. I need a better photo of her!

Obligatory apartment progress photo. I love this room so much 🥰
A photo of our new living room, in progress. It’s a lovely bright room with three visible windows and wood floors. There’s a circular, rainbow-colored rug on the floor. There are a couple of chairs, a warm dark grey couch, a jade colored ottoman, a cat perch, and a beat-up old wooden student desk that we’re using as an end table. Outside the middle window is a leafy green tree, and the left window has some gorgeous ivy trellising across it. It’s raining, so the light is soft and the open windows are letting in the breeze.

I’ve never thought of myself as a cardboard box aficionado, exactly, but I just found my favorite packing box of all time 🥰
A small cardboard box with a roll of packing tape for scale. The box says:

A BOX SMALL
MADE IN HONDURAS

It’s just the best.

RS your most overly dramatic B&W selfie 1. Me with my lil emo cat on my shoulder, 100% “about the author” vibes 2. Me cosplaying as Emma Golding on Halloween, at the elementary school I used to work at, in 2020
A photo of a human wearing glasses with a cat on their shoulder and cuddled into their face (it’s me and Emerson)A black and white photo of a human wearing their best approximation of 19th century clothing, with wispy curls around their face (it’s me)
