The stunning 12th century chancel arch, surrounded by a gorgeous backdrop of warm-toned limewash and lime plaster, in the Church of St. Margaret of Antioch, Knotting, Bedfordshire 💕

Cromarty on Wednesday; we harled this in 1999 & the owners have kept on top of maintenance, espc the Crowsteps. We looked at the archaeology of harl, thickness, detailing and galetting,& how it folded over the details. Nothing fancy or imaginative, just looking at precedent. Seamless architecture.

Don’t you just love the soft, curviness that can be created with lime plaster? 💕 Not to mention all of the functional benefits it brings too, of course! Stamford, Lincolnshire.

Hougharry Noth Uist, Kilmuir Old Kirk c. 1764 general view, second gives an idea of how thick the lime harl is and rich in marine aggregates - astonishingly robust. Face bedded galletting with thick harl whispering into the window detail, a feature with no raised margin to protect it. Knockout.

Teampall na Trianaid & the associated Teampull Clann a’ Phiocair is a spectacular multi period (14th – 15th C) site, North Uist in an exposed location. Despite the evident wear and tear, the finishes remain to a greater or lesser degree on all elevations @limefinishesgroup1.bsky.social

I admire this, so you haven't risen up in the world high enough to have a raised band? Sod it, just limewash one on. Gorstan, near Garve. It's been demolished now, highlighting the importance of recording.

We’re busy planning this year’s LFG weekend away, which will take place in the autumn, so here’s some pics from last year’s gathering…as always, a large helping of staring at and discussing lime finishes, with a generous side of socialising with like-minded people! 🤩

I made a naive error this morning @limefinishesgroup1.bsky.social and put in 'limewashed cottage' in to iPhoto's search this morning, anyway these are a few that came up.

When looking for evidence of finishes on a church, a great place to check is behind grave markers that have later been attached to the wall - it’s harder to reach (if purposeful stripping of finishes has occurred) and also provides a sheltered spot, so any remnants tend to survive 😀

The Clachan Church, Lochbroom 1817 with fantastic survivals of harling @limefinishesgroup1.bsky.social on both gables. You can see how the original harl was overlain with a freshening up at some point and the more recent cement works are obvious. Our youngest LFG group member.

Views of Glatton Church, Cambridgeshire We can see now, that other than the upper tower, the church is of rubble construction - and yet the documentary and archaeological evidence suggests it wasn’t always that way! Continued below…

Some lovely bits of lime finish left on St. Mary’s Church, Acton Burnell, Shropshire. Note how the finish also once covered the architectural details, not just the flat walls!

The well known view of the rows of terraced cottages of the 18th century shipbuilding community of Buckler’s Hard, leading down to the Beaulieu River in Hampshire…but if we look at the documentary evidence - a 19th century photo and painting, we can see they weren’t bare brick! 🤩

Today we have lime finishes from New England to share! Here’s an example of what was originally external plaster - protected, as it has since become part of an internal dividing wall between the two houses. So, external plaster, on lath, marked out and coloured to represent brickwork 🤩

What a difference…here’s the C17th Old Hall in Orton, Cumbria…with and without its coat on! Aside from the improved performance that the lime coating provides, we can see that it also elevates the aesthetic and makes architectural details - like the hood mouldings over the windows - stand out more 😀

When you find a dark and dingy alleyway (snicket / ginnel / other term!) keep your eyes peeled for plaster, limewash and paint finishes! 😀 This example is from Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria.

An illustration of how a plaster can elevate the aesthetics of a building, creating a bright and cohesive effect, rather than the visual confusion of rubble walling. This example is from Devon 😀

A Gwynedd slate quarry Caban…a communal shelter and the intellectual and spiritual heart of quarry culture. Low buildings, complete with a fireplace (now buried). Lime finishes made with slate aggregates were crucial to the comfort of these crude shelters in the exposed uplands of Eryri!

Wheal Coates is a former tin and copper mine on the Cornish Coast, near St. Agnes. We can see that there is a lime coating (much eroded) that was lined out, to give a more uniform appearance 🤩

When out looking at churches, don’t forget to look out for remnants of lime finishes! A large number were once plastered and limewashed (and who knows, maybe decorated externally, too?) 🤩 Pictured: St. Andrew’s Church, Barton Bendish, Norfolk.

1 of 2… Floors Castle, near Kelso, has some incredible flat lined out plaster, dating to 1721, by William Adam. The wall was chased out to make the lining out of the plaster easier - but interestingly, the lines don’t respect the bedding of the stone…

The surviving interior decorative plaster in the ruin of Sutton Scarsdale Hall, in Derbyshire, is fantastic - created by Italian master plasterers, Arturi and Vassali, in the early 18th century, it has managed to cling on despite the odds 😍

The lovely Fauconberg Arms in Coxwold, North Yorkshire, now bare stone but once lime coated, as we can see from archive images and physical evidence on the building (which survives particularly well behind the current sign!) 😀
