We could do this with a shared Google Docs folder. I'd have to stick the Project Guttenburg license info back into my files but that's easy.

I think that's a really neat idea. I've got several public domain works saved as PDFs that are already offset for printing (32 pages or 8 sheets per section). That said offset printing in Word is pretty easy. I can tell you how to do it if interested.

But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell. Matthew 5:22.

Jewish people have maintained a tradition of scholarship for 3000 years and didn't require their strongest academics to be celibate. No surprise they rank higher on IQ tests. With the caveat that IQ tests don't measure all kinds of intelligence.

All excellent questions, and one of the reasons I don't believe the Bible is infallible. It's relevant in the context of resistance because other people do (sadly) think that.

I will have to look those up. Most of studies involved the cannon in its current form. I'm less familiar with the apocryphal works (if that's even the right word).

Sometimes they change the order of events too. Shakespeare did the same. It's because both cultures viewed history as a morality play and wrote their narratives accordingly. The gospels are most like a biopic that presents a sliver of a person's life to explore and illustrate their character.

Quick note from my nerdiness: the earliest Christians were fiercely monotheistic Jews and they most likely wouldn't have believed in the divinity of Jesus. John's gospel is the one that teaches the concept the most clearly and it's also the latest one written. I think those are connected.

Nazism might have collapsed without a charismatic leader, but dictators don't come from thin air. Trump and Hitler are both the results of society as a whole leaning towards authoritarianism and the commodification of the press. Sadly, Trumpism wouldn't die if he had a stroke tomorrow.

One reason I think it's important to read it. So you can show people what's actually in there, regardless of your goal in so-doing. It's also why atheists often know the Bible better than (some) believers.

I guess that depends on what your theory of atonement is. Penal subsidiary atonement is relatively recent. The moral influence theory is a lot older, as is Christus Victor.

The word "gay" is not in the Greek text. The 1st century had no concept of sexual orientation. The word "homosexual" did not occur in any English translation until the 1940s. Did God's word change, or did the cultural bogeyman of the day?

That's really cool that you have that heritage, it's something to be proud of for sure! I never knew either of my grandfathers, I think they served but I don't think either was sent overseas. My dad was born in 1947.

Yeah. 66 of them for the Protestant cannon. A few more for Catholics (I'm not as familiar with the Catholic Cannon). There's a theory that Hebrews might have been written by Priscilla, which is why her name was left off.

lilly512.bsky.social @lilly512.bsky.social · 27/04/2025
That is certainly true, sadly. A natural outgrowing of Protestantism. The Bible can't actually be made to mean anything if you use good exegetical practice (most Christians don't) but even that leaves a lot of ground open.

Agree but Denmark was able to save her Jewish population non-violently. Civil Rights became a reality in large part due to civil disobedience. In a world where nukes exist, I am not sure that a handgun in the hands of a citizen is going to do very much. The state has a monopoly on violence.

Believe it or not I agree with you on that. But the Bible is at play in our society. People want to set up a theocracy based on the Bible. Being able to quote their own scriptures back at them is one of the few things I've found effective.

Of course politics was involved. Politics is involved in anything humans do. I think the doctrine of hell developed as a control mechanism too, it isn't taught in any kind of clarity in either Testament.

Soldiers liberated the camps, this is true. How did they know where to look or what was going on at all? Because of the covert work of the resistance movements. They were so important that the OSS released guides on how to sabotage the Reich without calling attention. Worth a read. shorturl.at/NeDqE

Correction to an earlier claim: I know the process of translation generally used by scholars, and how the King James was translated. "Every English version" was mis-speaking, I meant how English versions are generally put together, rather than the exact history of each individual version.

I don't believe the Bible is BS. I believe it's important work of religious literature that has shaped Western civilization and continues to do so. I study it because I am interested in the intersection of theology and sociology.

The gospel of Mark is generally regarded as the earliest of the Gospels, about 70 CE. John and Luke report different last words based on the author's purpose in writing (as was common in ancient biography). The two reports give "Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit" and "it is finished."

Current translations, I dunno. The first few were Tyndale's translation and then the King James. Scholars generally date the gospels to early first century, with Mark being the earliest. The development of the cannon was a long process, but here's the info. www.bartehrman.com/canonization...

I have a degree in Biblical studies, friend. I know what the Bible is. I do know how it came to be. I know about textual criticism, textual transmission, and the process of translation of every English version. I also know what a hermetical framework is.

I have no argument with that. But it is my choice, personally, that I will not use violence. I support non-violent resistance from a moral standpoint, but also because scholarly research shows this form of activism is about 2x as effective.

Also I don't know enough about Chile to know if the secular authorities would actually do anything. Defrocking someone and sending them to live in seclusion is about as close as the Catholic Church can get to sending someone to prison. Kept them away from the kids at least.

Thank you. It's always important that we have all the information. Just so we are clear, as a rape survivor, the sexual abuse of ANYONE, but most especially children, is reprehensible and I do hope the Catholic church continues to get tougher on it.

Who should the Catholic parish in Gaza report it to? Or churches in areas where children will be at risk of honor killings for speaking badly of leaders? Pope Francis himself said he was trying to institute a zero tolerance policy, and I agree that should be the rule for the Western world.

Leviticus also says you shouldn't eat shrimp or wear fabric made of two types of clothing. I'm reading Matthew 25:41-47. Not enough characters to type it in but paste that into Bible Gateway or another Bible site if you want to read it.

lilly512.bsky.social @lilly512.bsky.social · 24/04/2025
No argument there. There's a long history of cover-up, not only in the Catholic church, but in culture. It's why so few rape survivors go to the police. It's easier to not be re-traumatized by being asked what you were wearing.

Do you have a source from that? Because I know Pope Francis fired a lot of Chilean priests. You can say he didn't go far enough (which I agree with) but he tried. Which is better than Benedict who just sat on the issue.

I had the same question. My guess is that in some areas of the world, local law is either corrupt or non-existent (like the single Catholic parish in Gaza). But it does look like that in cases where civil law does have reporting requirements, the clergy has to follow them and go to the police.
