Blume www.artic.edu/artworks/185064
Louise Lawler first rose to prominence in 1984, when she photographed the renowned collection of modern and contemporary masterworks owned by Mr. and Mrs. Burton Tremaine as it was installed in their Connecticut home. Since that time, Lawler has focused her camera on the installation of works of art to examine the institutional frameworks that determine their significance. The resulting photographs transcend pure documentation, occupying a key position within conceptual discourse. Blume, a recent icon in Lawler’s oeuvre, documents a Jeff Koons sculpture on display at Galerie Max Hetzler’s booth at Art Basel in 2003. Due to its highly reflective surface, the artwork becomes a vehicle for advertising other objects for sale; like the artist, it reflects and records the installation of surrounding art. Finally, Koons’s polished surface yields an unavoidable self-portrait of Lawler, with her camera, at the moment of photographic capture.

Toshirō Mifune in Rashōmon (1950)
Captured in a piercing, sun-drenched close-up, Toshirō Mifune delivers a visceral portrait of raw physical intensity as the volatile bandit Tajōmaru in Akira Kurosawa’s cinematic masterpiece Rashomon (1950). Sweat glistens across his brow and cheekbones beneath the oppressive heat, while his narrowed, predatory gaze and furrowed brow radiate an unpredictable mixture of suspicion, pride, and feral defiance. Bound in a coarse, dark cloth head-wrap over disheveled hair, Mifune's weathered features and dark stubble reflect the untamed existence of an outlaw living on the margins of society. The photograph evokes a palpable sensory environment: the stifling, humid heaviness of the ancient forest, the relentless drone of summer cicadas echoing through the canopy, the abrasive scrape of rough-woven hemp against dust-streaked skin, and the blinding glint of high-noon sunlight breaking through the leaves.
As the film that catapulted post-war Japanese cinema onto the global stage, Rashomon redefined narrative storytelling through its revolutionary exploration of subjective memory, human vanity, and moral ambiguity. Adapted from Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s short stories "In a Grove" (Yabu no Naka) and "Rashōmon," the plot constructs four conflicting testimonies surrounding a single violent encounter in the woods. Mifune’s landmark performance turned the traditional samurai-era villain into a kinetic, animalistic force, seamlessly fusing explosive physical theatricality with deep psychological insecurity. Collaborating with visionary cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa, Kurosawa famously used angled mirrors inside the dense forest set to bounce harsh, natural sunlight directly onto the actors' faces, creating a striking visual rhythm that visually manifests the fractured, elusive nature of truth.

Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967) : Childhood's Garden, 1917 Opaque and transparent watercolor with graphite and colored chalk on slightly textured cream-colored paper 27 × 18-15/16 inches Further description in the alt text 👇
Burchfield inscribed this watercolor, “A memory of Childhood, an attempt to recreate the way a flower garden looks to a child.”

Burchfield called 1917 his golden year, when he was immersed in capturing the sensations of childhood wonder.

In Childhood’s Garden Burchfield densely clustered, oversized flowers and trees around a backyard shed. The blue sky and sunshine are radiant. The garden comes alive as if with human animation - the trees gesture expressively and the richly colored blooms could be making faces. The low perspective allows the viewer to feel overwhelmed as a boy might, experiencing the natural world for the first time.

In a letter to collector Edward Root, the artist described the importance of this and other watercolors he painted in 1917:

"In 1917 I made a collection of such 'memories' (childhood moods I called them) filling a notebook with them. They formed the starting point of many of the sketches of that period. One of the last you bought (the garden one) was one of these, an attempt to realize a memory I had of our garden as it appeared to me as a child.
It is refreshing to me to find another man remembering and cherishing such childish impressions and considering them valuable. Most adults spurn the things of their childhood and consider the yearning for such things in a grown man as a weakness. Perhaps it is, but it is still my belief that it is of such stuff that real art is made. As an artist grows older, he has to fight disillusionment and learn to establish the same relation to nature as an adult as he had when a child."

Paul Klee : Once emerged from the grey of night, 1918 Watercolor Once emerged from the gray of night Heavier and dearer and stronger Than the fire of the night Drunk with God and doubled over. At present ethereal Surrounded by blue Soaring over the glaciers Toward the wise constellations. More! 👇
The structure of the poem determines the composition. The weft of the image is a wall of colored squares of more or less the same size. The black lines of the Arabic capitals determine other chromatic partitions like the stones of a mosaic. The two parts of the composition

Klee's first attempt to mix painting and poetry was in 1916, with a series of six watercolors conceived from Chinese poems. In this work, where the image is preceded exceptionally - but also necessarily -by the title-text, it should definitely be noted that the original order of the colored squares is imposed by the logos, even though the letters lose their linguistic function. This is no doubt what the wide gray band in the center of the surface confirms. Where the text disappears, there is only chaos, that is if we follow Klee's theory of color, which is the inorganic mix (pigmentary or subtractive) of colors that justly gives gray. In the beginning was the verb ..." said Klee in the "Creative Credo."

Letters and numbers were highly esteemed by Klee as a way of expressing himself in an original manner. The "Creative Confession" gives some indication of the relationship he sees between a formal sign and a lived experience. Regarding these, he raises the problem of the appearance and essence of written signs. Letters and numbers not only reveal a precise experience but also contain a certain sense of a "history of form."
