One thing Eddie has learned about himself over the years is there’s very little he won’t do if Buck is the one asking. It’s a fact of life he’s come to accept. It’s the reason Eddie is the only one who can stand to be around Buck when he has a clipboard in his hands. It’s the reason Eddie let himself be sprayed with perfume and chased by bees. It’s the reason Eddie tries whatever baked good Buck shoves in his face. It’s the reason Eddie always orders a Hawaiian pizza even though he thinks pineapple on pizza is an abomination. It’s the reason Eddie agreed to go out to a club where he definitely did not want to be to attempt to meet women that he definitely did not want to talk to. It’s the reason Eddie followed Buck to the gym at the Nashville firehouse when all he really wanted to do was sit down and eat the casserole Blue had offered them. And unfortunately, it’s the reason Eddie agreed to take the back roads that led them to a diner in New Mexico, where a deeply disturbed woman decided she had found the perfect replacement for her son.

Eddie can’t say no to Buck. The truth is, he really doesn’t even try that hard.

“…Yes?” Eddie asks, uncertain now. His arms uncross. Defensively, he sips his juice.

“You’re asking me to marry you on a Wednesday?”

One of Eddie’s eyebrows ticks up; the bitchy one. “Sorry, does Thursday fit your schedule better? Should we pencil this in for later?”

hehehehe (title is "can't say no") Inspired by Buck's "Oh, so you just do whatever I tell you?" and me thinking "well what if Buck told (asked) Eddie to go on a date with him?"

“I just feel like we’d be so good together, Eddie. I mean, we already are, but I feel like we’d be even better if we finally called this what it is.”

Eddie has no idea what Buck is talking about. Even less so when Buck reaches forward and grabs both of Eddie’s hands in his.

“I know that we’ve done a lot of things backwards,” Buck continues. He chuckles. “I mean, we already have two kids. But I don’t want to miss out on anything with you. I want to do this right. So, Eddie Diaz, I’m officially asking—Would you like to go out on a date with me?”

Eddie freezes. What? Why would… why would Buck ask him on a date? What could Buck have possibly noticed about their recent interactions that would make him think that Eddie likes him romantically? Eddie has to say no, of course. He’s straight. This is one thing he can’t give Buck. Except… as Eddie looks at the hopeful expression on Buck’s face, he can’t get the words out. That familiar feeling fills his chest, the desire to give Buck whatever he wants, if it’s at all within Eddie’s power. And the thought of saying no, of watching Buck’s face crumple in disappointment before he inevitably schools it into acceptance and understanding, literally makes him feel sick.

So, Eddie smiles. “Yeah. Yeah, I’ll go on a date with you.”
