Last week, #LIGOMagazine was at RASreach in Manchester! @royalastrosoc.bsky.social @manchester.ac.uk Lots of great presentations and discussions - plus the chance to hear the #GravitySynth in action!
A poster presenting the LIGO Magazine. The poster is on a blue conference poster board. Next to the poster there is a copy of the latest edition of the LIGO Magazine attached to the poster board with string. Leon Trimble showing the GravitySynth which uses gravitational wave technology as a musical instrument! Gravity Synth is a table top interferometer plus modular synthesisors to create music.
The image shows two people in a lecture room stood next to a table with lots of equipment on it. There are many cables and synthesisors. The Gravity Synth is in an open orange travel case and you can see the green glow of the laser.

Science Magazine discusses the potential impact of proposed budget cuts on our operation www.science.org/content/arti... by Adrian Cho ☄️⚛️🧪🔭
"The loss would inflict disproportionate damage on the observatory’s scientific reach, scientists say. Researchers would find it more difficult to distinguish a black hole collision in the distant cosmos from a nearby seismic tremor or anything else that shakes the remaining interferometer. A real gravitational wave likely produces signals in both U.S. detectors within 10 milliseconds, the time it takes the ripple to cover the cross-country distance. Without the ability to compare data from the two instruments, detections would be less sure and their rate would fall at least 25%, Reitze says, and possibly much more."
