How can the same El Niño bring drought to some places and flooding to others? My new @uk.theconversation.com explainer breaks down the Walker circulation, teleconnections and other mechanisms in simple terms, with a schematic I created for the piece. tinyurl.com/4vak6pc7 #ElNino #ClimateScience

In my latest article for @uk.theconversation.com, I look at this year’s Indian monsoon paradox: drier than normal overall, potentially influenced by El Niño, yet still bringing extreme rainfall, floods and landslides. tinyurl.com/yycyjfem @sotonoceanearth.bsky.social #ElNino #IndianMonsoon.

A ‘super El Niño’ could make India’s monsoon drier yet more dangerous
El Niño summers can mean less rain overall, but more extreme daily rainfall.

We also find that CMIP6 models struggle to reproduce the observed rainfall trends, and discuss why. 📄 Read: doi.org/10.1038/s414...

Tropical precipitation response to anthropogenic climate change in recent decades - Nature Communications
Editorial summary: Observations show that tropical rainfall changes over the past four decades are driven primarily by shifts in atmospheric circulation rather than increases in atmospheric moisture. ...

In our new @natcomms.nature.com study, we show that recent tropical rainfall changes are strongly shaped by shifts in atmospheric circulation, with land–sea thermal contrast and Indo-Pacific Warm Pool intensification playing key roles.

Climate change and temperature are closely linked: as CO₂ rises, most of the planet warms. But rainfall is more complex. Are recent tropical rainfall trends following the Wet-Get-Wetter or Warm-Get-Wetter paradigms, or is something else driving the changes?

Changes associated with the land–sea thermal contrast and the intensification of the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool appear to play an important role. We also find that CMIP6 models struggle to reproduce the observed rainfall trends, and discuss several plausible reasons for these discrepancies.

We show that recent tropical rainfall changes are primarily driven by shifts in atmospheric circulation, rather than being explained solely by traditional thermodynamic paradigms.

In our latest study published in Nature Communications, we investigate the drivers of tropical precipitation changes over recent decades and examine whether CMIP6 climate models are able to reproduce the observed patterns.

Our new paper on marine heatwaves in the North Indian Ocean is now published in Frontiers in Climate. We identify distinct modes of marine heatwave variability shaped by interactions between ENSO and the Monsoon Intraseasonal Oscillation. Read more: www.frontiersin.org/journals/cli...

In my latest article for @uk.theconversation.com, I break down how warmer oceans, higher evaporation, slow storm motion, and coastal proximity can turn even weak cyclones into intense rainmakers.

Wrote an article for The Conversation on this year’s extreme monsoon rainfall and its increasing trend. It summarizes some of the major flooding events this year, explores their causes, and discusses the long-term trend in extreme monsoon precipitation over India.

- Moisture in the 2023 event was primarily sourced from regions near Madagascar and the western Indian Ocean, while 2013 had stronger inland contributions. - The Bay of Bengal acted more as a vapor transport pathway than a direct moisture source.

Our new study in Climate Dynamics reveals how interactions between the subpolar and subtropical jet streams played a critical role in triggering the extreme rainfall events over the North Indian Subcontinent in 2013 and 2023. Read: link.springer.com/article/10.1...

🌍 Global Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) are steadily rising 🌊. This radial plot shows monthly SST anomalies averaged over 60°S–60°N. Each ring = a year, and segments = months, highlighting the growing intensity of positive SST anomalies due to climate change.

The 2024 Southwest Monsoon in India recorded 7.6% above the Long Period Average (LPA), marking an 'excess rainfall' year. This visualization shows monsoon trends over decades, revealing fluctuations influenced by ENSO and IOD phases. Thanks to @lijodxl.bsky.social for insightful suggestions!
