Model 💃 @sylviamuse.bsky.social Why you should wake up at 5am … #finaart #ibiza #apain #artnude #naturallightphotgrapher #lightyearace

There weren’t many people around early enough to catch us shooting with this beautiful sky. Sylvia made a great silhouette against the beautiful background sky. When we are touring locations we very often have to force ourselves out early in the morning to get the sunrise and beautiful soft light in the morning , then we have to whole day to explore when realistically the sun is too bright to make the best pictures , until later in the day we go out and shoot again in the golden evening light. Contrary to popular belief we don’t and can’t do pictures all day long so we get a great opportunity to explore the places we visit. Ibiza was a genuine surprise for me as once out of the main party towns the smaller resorts and the rest of the island has a really great lifestyle and vibe.

Incredible pose by Joy as she literally folded herself in to the chair and melted on to the floor. I’ve seen many versions of a similar concept but none has quite matched the 90 angle and if anyone did then hats off to you , because it’s a truly impressive level of flexibility

💃 #model Romi Park life … #fineart #fineartnude #artnude #artisticnude #noflash #nudephotography #nudeart #nude #nudemodel #nudeartphotography #portrait #artisticnude #nudeartmodel #barcelona

This beautiful path was quiet for just long enough for us to get a set of pictures with Romi choosing different poses. In this one she just crunched up in a ball and I love the effect. Two minutes later and there were people walking down the path but by then Romi had quickly slipped on a black soft dress and we wandered along as if nothing happened. I was using my 70-200 lens at its maximum so I was actually a good 20 metres away from Romi lying on the ground to get this angle and perspective with the field of focus just around Romi and everything else just softly blurred.

I love a portrait where the subject is obviously deep in contemplation or there is a story there for what they might be thinking. The eyes are not engaging directly to you so you have options to imagine what the scenarios is. Capture a model dreaming and it’s immediately a much more interesting pose for me. I. This one Louisa is sat on a set of drawers that were in front of the wi Dow in her bedroom and we cleared the top and then she just jumped up and sat in the window. I was able to get space by standing in the doorway and using a long lens to get very little distortion in the picture.

One final picture from this set of Carla singing ting in the doorway. I do like the contrast in this set , I remember being concerned there was not enough light in the shadow of the building because in reality it was a very bright sunny day and having been out in the sunny garden this corner seemed very dark and in shadow. But as always the camera adjusted better than the eye ( you know the effect if you look at the sun, then it takes a while for you to be able to see properly again) … and after a few pictures I could see the contrast on the back of the camera. It took a while but finally my eyes also adjusted. And when we went back out in the sun it all seemed so bright again !!

I really like that you can post sets of pictures to showcase more the creativity of the model because once I’m set up, you can see how Aliah has chosen different poses and I’ve just captured them as she has the freedom to do what she feels. The only thing is I don’t think it’s as effective to post as a set in the feed so I’ve added the rest of the set in the comments. Aliah was doing modeling for fun and as a hobby and had never really worked in a studio like this before , in fact I’ve not seen her active since so maybe it put her off for life 😅 !! But she was really creative and I think really blossomed when she had the chance. She always added her own touch to each pose.

If you are not viewing these on a computer , I’d strongly recommend turning the phone 90 degrees and looking at them in the landscape view because I think they are much more striking that way ….

Each time I post a picture from this set I probably mention that it is the basement boiler room of a quite large office building.. but somehow it looks like it could easily be the boiler room of an old battleship !!! This is the black and white version of the picture as Natascha battles with the valve handles.

I think it is a really great initiative by the Dutch government to allow and encourage the use of the empty office buildings for small businesses to rent on a temporary basis. It gives a cheap place to lease and help for smaller startups and for building owners it gives a small income for what would otherwise be an empty building until they find someone to move in the whole building A win win for both

It was definitely a great place for a photography studio with so many areas as corners to shoot. When we were shooting on the roof we soon discovered we had an audience from the building next door where there were a whole team of roofing contractors working. We ended up finishing after just a few pictures as all the contractors just stopped working and gathered to watch. Even though they were over the road it was still very off putting so since we had the whole building to explore, why waste time on the roof.

All done with natural light only , the window is behind me and the camera settings highlighted just the light in Sylvia’s body and then with editing the background was darkened even further. Sylvia is actually lying on a table and her hair is falling down , and then we have turned the picture upside down to produce the affect of her hair flying.
This picture actually ended up on the wall of a hairdresser that saw it and wanted it for their Salon along with a few other of our black and white pictures.

Almost like a magazine cover , Charlotte sits in the bay of the window wearing just an oversized jumper and the light softly paints down one side
The great thing about the blinds is that you can use them to control the amount of light shining in. Charlotte was a friend of another model I was shooting with and she tagged along to have a holiday in Amsterdam but I took the opportunity and asked her do some work haha 😆

This portrait of Amber and Charlotte was done from standing on a chair with the two of them staring up at the camera. There are beautiful catchlights from the windows in both of their eyes as they both look straight at you. no flash or additional lighting was needed it’s just the windows … I quite like to throw in a portrait or two just to keep life interesting and see who is concentrating ..🤪

Marmalade took me to this place to do my first shoot with her , to be honest I hadn’t been to many urbex sites and this was like a real adventure. Looking back I wish we had stayed there all day taking pictures but at first I was a little shocked because everything seemed so dark and dusty and broken down. I was thinking it would be hard to find anywhere to take anything decent. But it’s these type of trips that really teach you how to look for light opportunities and how to set up the camera to get the balance in the picture right. The UK has some really great old buildings still without too much graffiti and with broken down old character. Long ago they still created factories with character and arches and beautiful windows … compared to modern factories they were works of art 🖼️

For this picture the main light came from the window above the door , but there was also some light from the left hand side window which was very dusty but you can see the touch of light if you look on Marmalades knee and feet..

I think this is one of the sets and shoots I’m actually most proud of. It was such a different concept for me and yet I feel it’s one where I met the challenge and between Jake and myself we created something different. I always of course love simplicity but also Jake is one of the most expressive people I have had the pleasure to work with. Literally he told stories with his posing. His imagination in that sense is very special.

I love this pose Romi chose .. A mixture of relaxed and so so elegant and naturally censored. One thing I always think raises the quality massively in a picture is the small details especially the feet. Great models always make a special effort to pose the feet well , not just stand flat footed but with pointed toes. It lifts an image there is no doubt …..

Having become very disillusioned at work , photography was my real saviour. I became addicted to shooting and editing the pictures sometimes doing four or five shoots in a weekend and editing the pictures during the week. I know by then I was probably not very focused at work … but I discovered it was pretty hard to have normal conversations with anyone who wasn’t a photographer or model without them looking at you in a very weird way and suspecting all manner of evils about you. Especially at work it was just not possible, so photography was my secret second life. During the day I was a running a software team in a Tech Company and during the evenings I was Lightyearace … I carried on that crazy double life for five or six years before eventually I just gave up work and focussed on photography.
Anyway I did the session with Ivory at the end of a day of shooting 3 other models in the studio just as the last light was about to disappear. But often in the studio there was a bright shaft of light that reflected in for maybe a few minutes just before sunset and that’s the light we used here. It’s almost a bronze colour but the rest of the studio was almost in darkness. And that’s how this picture came about 🤷

If you are looking at this picture in your phone , just try turning the phone landscape so you can really see it as I saw this scene when I was shooting. The landscape version of this picture is exactly what I wanted to capture with the focus so sharply on Celine’s features and the rest if the scene fading in to a blur …. Of course nowadays on many phones you can select a fake version of this which tries to emulate this type of picture using a portrait mode. But it can’t do it as well as the real original…. If you scroll in and analyze the picture closely you can see the line of the focus clearly by looking at the wood floor boards ….

We ran out of time with the final set of pictures , and only had a chance to capture one or two pictures in the set. This one for me captured a bygone era from the fifties. I can almost imagine a the set at an old railway station waiting for steam train to arrive. It was one of those beautiful days in the studio, the light was bright but not direct so the image is sharp and yet still soft and of course Laluneta pose matched the quirky nature perfectly

One of a few shoots I did just before I left the UK was a shoot with Amie in this old harbour which has an old castle like bridge that defended the original waterway. It is all abandoned and solitary and hardly anyone goes there so it’s a perfect location for a shoot. Unfortunately Amie had brought several outfits including this fabulous long back dress. And she really knows how to pose in it. I didn’t know she could break herself in two and pose quite like this though

This is the colour version as I posted the bnw version ages ago. I actually like the colour version which makes the cement Pillars Romi is sitting on much more obvious somehow. We were in the middle of a park just outside Barcelona which was fortunately almost deserted so had plenty of opportunity to be creative. Romi always carries a black wrap around dress which is easy to drop and put on at short notice if some innocent bystander accidentally wanders nearby. The lush green background provided a great contrast for the nude to be very effective. And for once because Romi was higher up I didn’t have to crouch on the floor or kneel down and could stand upright !!!! This was shot in my old canon 5D mkii which had no auto focus and was considerably more tricky to use than my latest camera but still use the same lens which is 70-200mm f4 which is absolutely one of my favorites for outdoor portraits ….

The slight touch of the hand on the window really adds to the emotion in her pose. I love these little touches. Also it’s much more impactful for me that she does not have eye contact with camera. It forces you to imagine who or what she is thinking about. It’s much more subtle and almost makes it feel like you are a secret voyeur watching on as she gazes out of the window. One of the only things I always start with in a shoot is explaining to the model that I don’t want them to look at me. Then only when I want eye contact do I ask them specifically to look at the camera. (Hint …. I very rarely do ….. but I know when I want to break my rules too 😁)

A glass walled building I. The middle of the forum provided a perfect place to get some really interesting reflections. Of course we had to be quick to avoid passersby but luckily it wasn’t too busy. Romi had a lightweight black shawl she could pick up quickly if anyone innocently walked around the corner …. Even though it was mid morning the sun was obscured by cloud so there was a nice amount of light with nothing too strong to burn out the highlights.

Who doesn’t love a set of full length open doors. The light from a door allows you to shoot full length with even light across the whole scene. And beautiful shadows and depth …. The black and white version of this is lovely too but the colour version has such beautiful brown tones that it’s hard to resist.
