ok well this one took off - if you're wondering whether I know what I'm talking about, I wrote a paper (with @anthropunk.bsky.social ) on the original Meta glasses when they were called "Project Aria" and predicted this sort of result www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
An excerpt from the paper: 4.2.3. Willingness to halt development
Finally, Facebook needs to accept the possibility that their technology and/or methods are socio-technically flawed and will not be acceptable to the society into which it wishes to deploy Aria and future similar products. Google Glass was remarkably unaccepted (Reynolds, 2015), despite the technology offering new use cases and innovation in mobile computing User Experience. Although people have either consciously or without awareness allowed our privacy to be eroded over time by new technologies, obscured cameras and other recording devices run by a ‘faceless’ automated enterprise are still very much considered “creepy” (Tene & Polonetsky, 2013).

Buried by the lede - don’t fucking use gen AI if you don’t have the expertise, time, or care to check its work. It should never be a replacement for a skilled human doing a job. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/j...
Marketers chose the slogan after consulting an AI tool, looking for suggestions, Shinsegae Group said. It turned out some managers who approved the campaign never opened the email attachments showing the marketing material.

I put the finishing touches on my 6yo’s very low key home made Max Meow by @johnbgallagher.bsky.social costume today! Really proud of this. Learned how to badly appliqué and there’s a stuffed, tie on tail with attached stuffed lightning bolt that I didn’t take a photo of.

This absolutely breaks my heart. What ghouls these transphobes are, attacking welcoming and inclusive spaces like the WI and Girlguiding like this. Just awful, horrible, hateful human beings. Also fuck the media for platforming the hate that led to this. Ugh. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...
A screenshot from the Guardian newspaper online:
"Transgender WI members known to the leadership team at the organisation had already been informed of the decision before an announcement, said Green. 'They've been so respectful and so understanding of the decision, but profoundly sad,' she said. 'I spoke to one 80-year-old woman who has been in our organisation for decades, who said it was one of the greatest experiences of her life, and the only place in her 80 years where she's been treated as a woman with respect.'"

The kids and I went hedgerow foraging today! Got a lunch box full of crabapples and another full of blackberries. They got bored pretty quickly when they weren’t scoffing blackberries, but it was a good day! They enjoyed playing in the meadow nearby too, the long grass was good for hide and seek!

Now that the teaching term is over, I would like to post this poem that I saw recently.
FOR A STUDENT WHO USED AI TO WRITE A PAPER
Now I let it fall back in the grasses.
I hear you. I know this life is hard now.
I know your days are precious on this earth.
But what are you trying to be free of?
The living? The miraculous task of it?
Love is for the ones who love the work.

I updated this while on the reception desk for the afternoon at @staffsgames.bsky.social GradEx today. Food spawns, chickens will eat it (and it disappears after they eat enough of it), they face the direction they're travelling, and they will sometimes look like they're pecking the food.

Ryan once again summarising the state of things in the US in the most accurate and terrifying way. @garbageday.email
These are the demagogues, oligarchs, and literal teenage boys tearing apart our government right now. They are fueled by Silicon Valley's dream of a monarchist network state and blood and soil white nationalism and they want to replace our money with the speculative cryptocurrencies they're already holding, replace the country's digital infrastructure with X, an online platform they invested in, and route all federal power to Trump, a president they're actively bribing. They did not plan any of this in secret. They know this is their moment and the coup is underway. They are serious. And every day they're in power means more years, if not decades, of our lives that we will have to dedicate to trying to piece the country back together when they're gone.

This headline is making me SO CRANKY esp because I'm reading @shannonvallor.bsky.social's new book. These systems should never be placed in a position of replacing public service humans. They will just replicate existing poor decisions and further entrench harms. It will be a dark age.

That California has 400 incarcerated firefighters is just shocking in itself
Nearly 400 incarcerated
firefighters deployed to battle fires The California wildfires have become so destructive that hundreds of incarcerated firefighters have been deployed to help battle the blazes that are rapidly spreading across southern California as a powerful windstorm devastates the region.
The California department of corrections and rehabilitation (CDCR) said on Wednesday that it had deployed 395 imprisoned firefighters across 29 crews, while the county fights multiple out-of-control blazes fueled by extreme winds and dry conditions.
"The work of our incarcerated firefighters and staff is an essential part of this effort, and their commitment to protecting lives and property during these emergencies cannot be overstated," said CDCR secretary Jeff Macomber.
