There are fields full of Cavaliers and Roundheads, still fighting over the fate of England. Roman soldiers marching along the roads they built. Tragic Tudor queens, often minus their heads. And you…

I had a conversation with a friend last week about why we are rubbish at celebrating what we are good at. It was a timely chat as my Lichfield Lore blog has just tipped over into 100,000 all time visitors with 50,000 this year alone.

There are several stones around land that once belonged to the Worthington family of Maple Hayes. Most mark the planting of a woodland but are mistaken for gravestones. This one however, found by our local farmer, does actually appear to commemorate a death. Who, or most likely, what was Cecil?

I’m so glad the latest artwork in Lichfield depicts two Georgian gents. We definitely don’t do enough to celebrate that demographic here.

The Dyott crest & chapel at St Mary’s where generations of the famous Lichfield family lie. The death of a Dyott was marked by a torchlit procession accompanied by servants from their Freeford estate. No family members were present for fear of being the next to follow to the grave. #spookysunday

I’ve visited Farewell for many years but today was the first time I noticed this cross carved into the 14th chancel. Until 1527 a priory of nuns lived here alongside a spring, around three miles to the north of Lichfield.

On New Years Day 1915, HMS Formidable was struck by a torpedo. The dead were laid out in the cellar of the Pilot Boat Inn & the landlord’s dog came & sat by one of the bodies, licking its face.

A track in a field that takes you back in time to the Roman Empire. This is a part of Watling Street, just outside the settlement of Letocetum, and and somewhere along this short stretch was the junction with Ryknield Street.

The War Stone in Birmingham is believed to have been a boundary or hoar stone, giving its corrupted name to the street it now sits on. Originally the road was called ‘Deadman’s Lane’ which seems spookily prescient given a cemetery was consecrated here in 1848.

The Old Church Tower at Shenstone is all that survives of a medieval church built on a Saxon, and possible earlier, site. It was once a ruin, romantic but at real risk of collapse, until a group of locals formed a group to save it. It’s one of my favourite places in Staffordshire.
