Lilly King's a local author and we stan her around her. (My wife knows her but I've only met her.) Even so, this is just a test. And here's another. I'm sorry for clogging up your timeline! www.librarything.com/work/3409772...

I recently got on Match again—my picture, complete with marriage disclaimer is below. I heard they were bad. THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE—so much worse than I could have imagined, and I feel so sorry for everyone on them! The whole sordid experience made me want to do Chapter One all the more.

Dating was different then. Lisa is an author and former Brookline Booksmith bookseller, and we started our date at Trident Books, but we met on Match. We didn't tell people that—dating apps were still a little skeevy! In retrospect, they were find, even great.

Then, for obvious reasons, we didn't talk again for two weeks. (That was an unreal time. People were briefly nicer but dazed.) When we finally went on a date, it felt strange to do anything normal. (Not everyone felt that way; someone messaged her "Hey, let's go roller blading!" on September 12.)

Crazy thing related to Chapter One. I just realized we announced my "dating app for book lovers" on the 25th anniversary of when I first talked to my future wife, Lisa Carey, on Match. If you do the math on that one, yes, we first talked a day (or two) before September 11.

When the revolution comes, its first victims will be the people who put unnamed tracks on short-story audiobooks.

Hard truth: Crappy AI-written books wouldn't be getting book deals if people had taste to begin with.

People are getting their brains cooked by AI—dividing into idiotic AI boosters and Salem-Witchcraft-trial AI haters—because social media cooked their brains first.

It's important to oppose conspiracy thinking wherever it is. Vaccines aren't a conspiracy. Trump lost in 2020. And while it's understandable to oppose AI and AI book scanning, the AI companies aren't destructively scanning books as part of a master plan to destroy all the world's physical books.

Visited the intersection in Biddeford where Joan Sebastian Guerrero was shot by ICE yesterday. There was a continual stream of Mainers bringing votives candle and flowers. The asphalt where his body lay, bleeding out, was still distinctly red.

Is the junior senator from Maine going to deliver a speech to cameras and an empty chamber where they're mad at Israel or super-mad at Israel? It's all I can think about right now!

LibraryThingTim @librarythingtim.bsky.social · 10/07/2026

However, I think we can all agree the most important issue in the Maine Senate race is Israel!

To keep the same basic healthcare plan, @librarything.com needs to spend 21% more next year. We’re 10 people and health insurance is 2-4 employee we aren’t hiring. Yeah, gas is bad, but this stuff is absolutely crushing for a small business.

An LC librarian I met at ALA had business cards printed on the back side of actual, discarded catalog cards. Where can I get a gross of them myself, so I can slavishly imitate him?

The answer is clear: Gambling Books, a new line of "Choose Your Own Adventure" books, but instead of making decisions about what page to go to, you roll dice to find out. The "Lottery" book would have a lot of "You have lost." pages.

Democrats will lose the Senate because the left caught Trumpism—he "wasn't perfect" but he was “our champion” who “fights"! Competence and character were boring and ignored. Every scandal made him stronger. "The media" was out to get him! You got your man—and now he’s going to lose it all.

There's a real need for new library tech. One might even say there's a vacuum.

061

LibraryThingTim @librarythingtim.bsky.social · 30/06/2026

The most interesting tech I saw at ALA Chicago was an industrial-strength Roomba-like vacuum robot. I could totally see them running around libraries every night. That a vacuum was the most interesting technology, however, tells you something about the stagnation of library technology.

After Susan Kare's run was over, who was the Jony Ive of the UI? More generally, Apple's biggest impact on computers, design, cell phones and even watches wasn't the OBJECT, but the user interface and user experience. Why does this get such short shrift?
