Over the past 150 years, ALA has advocated at every level of government, for libraries and our communities. As we mark this anniversary for ALA and the field, check out a few of our key advocacy milestones, from library services for the blind to the creation of IMLS: ala.org/advocacy150
The American Library Association. 150 years of advocacy for libraries. Since its founding in 1876, the American Library Association (ALA) has
successfully advocated to strengthen libraries and the library profession. The
resulting public policies have helped to build our nation’s network of more than
120,000 libraries, which serve as an essential support for learning and creativity,
economic and social mobility, and full participation in our democracy.
The milestones below exemplify how ALA has secured federal funding and highspeed internet connections for libraries, copyright provisions that enable library
services, accessible reading materials for library users with disabilities, access to
government publications, and more.
