My apologies to everyone who is not enjoying leaf peeping perfection today.
A bit of land sticking out into a still clear blue lake with trees of all different colors and then more trees and mountains in the background

Between the dehydrator and canning, I’m caught up on tomatoes.
Seven pints of tomatoes canned in water and three pints of dill pickles, all lined up on a towel in my kitchen counter

When you have an abundance of very ripe tomatoes but no energy to deal with them on account of being sick, the dehydrator is your friend. All you gotta do is slice them up, spread them out, and plug it in.
Before: slices of juicy yellow orange tomato on stacked dehydrator traysAfter: dried out slices of red and orange tomatoes on paper towels, ready to be used in place of sun dried tomatoes (planning to store dry instead of pack in oil because botulism)

24 glorious ounces of tomato.
A giant yellow and green (will be orange ish when fully ripe) tomato on a kitchen scale reading 1 lb 8.0 oz.

I’ve been picking about a tomato per day this week and it’s fun to watch them change colors.

I didn’t check my garden yesterday because of the air quality and that thing happened.

Two month zucchini update, starting to worry about what month three will look like.
Zucchini has completely escaped the containment of the raised bed, it’s probably 4 ft tall and 5 ft wide, producing a dozen fruits a week, and I have to keep pruning so the peppers and artichoke planted next to it get at least some sunlight

I made sourdough focaccia and compound butter with garlic scapes from a local farm.
Flat rectangular loaf (is that even the right word?) of focaccia with green swirls of garlic scapes studding the top and a large pat of butter with green flecks next to it

Exciting garden developments this week include a bevy of cukes that should be pickable within the week, a little baby cantaloupe, three artichokes, and an unplanned peanut. Thanks, squirrels!
Four mid sized cucumbers (not the only four, maybe not even the biggest four)Tiny baby cantaloupe about the size and shape of a large olive, green and fuzzy because they don’t get brown and crispy until they’re biggerOne big artichoke atop a stalk and little buds of two others farther down, I’m a bit worried it’s not getting enough sun because the tomatoes are taking over everythingSmallish peanut plant that’s just leaves at this point and might not actually do anything because it’s in shade all the time. Silly squirrels don’t understand light requirements.

Yesterday I was despairing of my zucchini ever getting to be full sized (poor soil? poor pollination? something else?), but it turns out I was just too impatient.
Three reasonably sized zucchini! One maybe could have waited another day, but as previously established, patience is not one of my defining virtues.

I left town for a few weeks and came back to find my garden is OUT OF CONTROL. I did not realize how powerful this compost would be. 😂
Raised bed in early June, looking good but tidy, clear distinctions between all plants. Raised bed today, absolute riot of green leaves hanging over the edges of the bed, how am I even going to find veggies to harvest?! What a glorious problem to have.

Notes from a c. 1939 speech given by Edward Corsi, an Italian immigrant who held a variety of US government posts related to immigration and labor. The extent to which we are currently repeating the 1930s is an abject failure of our ability to learn from history.
[1939?]
We are witnessing in America today a growing
antagonism toward the alien and the foreign-born. This antagonism always appears in times of industrial crises, [when competition for jobs is keen and the labor market is ?]. With conditions continuing as they are, the alien is likely to become our national scapegoat.

This antagonism, fortunately, is not shared by the
majority of the people of this country; certainly not by those who realize that immigrants are human beings like the rest of us, no better, no worse. After all, the whole history of America is that the immigrant of today is the American of tomorrow.
That history began with the first immigrants who landed in America and it is continuing today with the immigrants who…

Happy anti-Valentine’s Day from the women’s suffrage movement! May we all be too bold for those who would hold us down.
Among the women who in history brightest have shone
Are those who have left the men’s affairs alone
Who in their homes have found their proper places
And sought not in crowds to show their faces
We see you seek a different line
You are too bold to be my Valentine.

If you couldn’t read cursive, how would you enjoy delightful historical letters like this one about doing truly horrifying things to cure your piles? From the papers of abolitionist Gerrit Smith (who did help end slavery but probably not his hemorrhoids).
A letter from 1840 advocating you stick a slightly softened tallow candle right on up your bum to cure your piles. Or maybe inject a decoction of comfrey root. Please don’t let RFK Jr. read this, he might get some terrifying new ideas…
