We love to see our leaders stand up for the right to read! To our beloved wonks: you can read the full text of #HRes1603 via the link below www.congress.gov/bill/119th-c...
The graphic is a screenshot of a PDF of the text of House Resolution 1603 and says, "119th Congress | 2D Session | H. Res. 1603 | Expressing concern about the growing problem of book banning and the proliferation of threats to freedom of expression in the United States."

A book sale flyer with mixed text and graphics. The right half of the flyer features a happy child holding shopping bags, and a smaller girl flying with a book as a hang glider. The text around the children reads: "We have your dopamine fix right here! Late stage capitalism has nothing on the public library. When's the last time you bought *anything* for $2.00?? Is anyone okay right now?" On the left half, the text reads: "Takoma Park Maryland Library. Book Sale. Saturday, October 10, 2026 | 10am-2pm. Donations in good condition accepted thru October 4th. All ages. All genres."

A book sale flyer with mixed text and graphics. On the right half, a large window with a dark and rainy background highlights a woman reading under a lamp on the left pane, and the following text on the right windowpane: "The impending darkness of winter awaits -- make sure you have sufficient reading material." On the left half of the flyer, the text reads, "Takoma Park Maryland Library. Donations in good condition accepted through Sunday, 10/4! Book Sale. Saturday, October 10, 2026. 10am-2pm @ the Library. All ages. All genres."

Book sale flyers, but they get progressively more unhinged
A book sale flyer with combined text and imagery. On the right side, there are three bookworms delighted to be reading around a conversation bubble that says, "Release your inner bookworm! Look how happy they are!" On the left side, the text reads, "Donations in good condition accepted thru October 4th. Book Sale. Saturday, October 10, 2026, 10am-2pm at the Library. All ages. All genres."

Are you missing a water bottle? Could it have been left at our library?? Seriously, though. Y'all need to keep better tabs on your stuff. Reclaim your bottle before October, or you might spot it with a new owner around town ...
A colorful assortment of reusable drinking vessels are pictured

The next Friends of the Library Book Sale is Saturday, 10 October! We are accepting donations through Sunday, 4 October. Bring us your books that need re-homing, and we will do our best to match them to people who will love them!
On a black background, a cartoon ghost holds an iced coffee and trick-or-treat bag and says, "It's not really spooky; it's just October." The headings on the left read, "BOOOOK SALE: Spooky Season Edition. All sales support Library programs for everyone! All ages. All genres." The text on the right reads, "Save the date! Saturday, October 10, 2026 | Donations accepted thru October 4th." The logo for the Friends of the Takoma Park Maryland Library is on the bottom right corner.

A reminder that we will be closed Sunday, 9/6, & Monday, 9/7 for the Labor Day holiday. Our thanks to unions & labor advocates for all the protections we currently enjoy — those victories are a testament to the historical & current movements built on grit & risk of workers from all walks of life.
The background has a historical photo of labor union protest coverage from the University of Maryland's Special Collections. The text reads: "Closed September 6 & 7 for Labor Day. We will reopen with regular hours on Tuesday, September 8"

Reminder: The Library will be closed for staff development this Thursday, 20 August. No programs will be held that day, nor study room reservations. We will reopen with regular hours on Friday, 21 August.
Yellow and green text on a blue background reads: "The Library will be CLOSED Thursday, 20 August for staff development. Come back and see us on Friday, 21 August for our normal operational hours." An icon showing two hands connected by a ring with a book and gear wheel inside is on the bottom right to emphasize the learning component of the closure.

We've been informed that we should have posted the spaghetti-haired Haaland at the circulation desk instead. Thank you for affirming our decision to make whatever this is. Also, come check out our Crochet and Cozies program!
A photo of members of the Norway Men's National Team at the 2026 Men's World Cup with Erling Haaland in the foreground displaying a magnificent mane of scrap yarn hair. The header and footer are handwritten in chunky permanent marker and say, "A YARN program?? SCORE. Join us for Crochet & Cozies, Mondays, 1030am — Program Room"

While we're not officially picking a national team to win the Men's World Cup, we *are* embracing the meme-ification of Erling Haaland. Can you find all 6 of them in the Library? We'll give you a clue to start:
A cutout of Norway's Men's National Team striker Erling Haaland points to a laminated purple sign that says, "This is a Whispering Zone" in English and "Esta es una zona de susurros" en español

We love Radius Books so much, because they know that art is for everyone! We just unpacked this new shipment, and it's full of incredible visual storytelling. And, instead of living on someone's coffee table, these will be on our shelves in the coming weeks so the whole community can enjoy them.

Trying not to think about all the ways that Big Tech is using your data? If you are considering divesting from companies that don't align with your values, we have a program for that! Join us at 6pm on April 1st and/or April 8th for one or both sessions.
On a green background, the following narrative text is featured: "Workshop on Ethical Tech: A free workshop for those who want to choose more ethical everyday tech. 1 April *and* 8 April, 6pm. Takoma Park Maryland Library, Program Room. With Bill Crandall presenting. 2 sessions." Alongside the text are a tablet, a laptop, and a smart phone using navigation.

Did you know that all of the tables in our main reading room were made by a local artist out of trees from the original building site? Shoutout to Treincarnation for crafting pieces that are truly stunning at all hours, and especially when sunlight comes through the clerestory windows.

#WorldBookDay is 365 days/year in our library, but we hope that the rest of the world is picking up a book today to celebrate, too 📚 Come visit us to browse and check out something that looks interesting ... maybe un libro nuevo en español, or a title for Arab American Heritage Month?

This year is the 150th anniversary of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke's birth. He wrote so many beautiful things, but these words feel timely more than 120 years later:
A quote by Rainer Maria Rilke in Letters to a Young Poet reading, "We must accept our reality as vastly as we possibly can; everything, even the unprecedented, must be possible within it. This is in the end the only kind of courage that is required of us: the courage to face the strangest, most unusual, most inexplicable experiences that can meet us."
