I don't buy the argument that private schools are relieving public schools of responsibility for those students. For one thing, there's economy of scale. As you cut funds, you're cutting not only salaries, but fixed costs for maintenance and equipment, impoverishing public education.

Or here's an even simpler solution. Export duties (tariffs) on diesel. That would drop the domestic price while cutting the budget deficit and making foreigners pay for it.

Actually, the US doesn't need diesel. There's not only no shortage, we export the stuff. What Americans need are lower prices on the diesel we have. Maybe stomp out the rampant betting on NYMEX that drives prices? Or bifurcate the contracts into domestic and export? And license exports.
