Liberty Victoria denounces the Victorian Government’s proposal to allow children to be sentenced to life imprisonment for violent offences. Evidence shows that early and harsh incarceration increases re-offending, perpetuating cycles of trauma, violence and disadvantage. 🧵1/2

The latest political attack on Victoria’s bail system is misguided and dangerous. The reality is that, since the recent changes to the bail system were introduced, there has been an explosion of prisoners who have been remanded in custody. 🧵1/7

We are living in a time when lack of trust in government is being exploited and misinformation weaponised to push extremist views into the mainstream. The answer to this is greater openness and more transparency. 🧵1/3

This attack was a disgusting act of racism. Politicians need to stop using Jews to score political points - Dutton saying this has to do with Aus supporting international law at the UN; Jacinta Allen proposing unrelated protest bans (firebombing a synagogue is a crime not a protest)

Universities should be protecting the rights of staff and students to speak about, and protest, international atrocities in Palestine, rather than burying their heads in the sand with vague notions of ‘civility’. My piece in @sydmorningherald.bsky.social www.smh.com.au/national/syd...
smh.com.au
Sydney Uni’s ‘enforced civility’ is an assault on free speech – and likely unlawful
It could become one of the most restrictive campuses in the country for peaceful protest, intellectual freedom and critical debate.
