Male survivors don't undermine the conversation about male violence. They are part of it.

I don't want anyone to go through what I did. I don't want other men to stay silent when other men are doing harm. And I don't want anyone to demand male survivors to stay silent when talking about this subject. Survivors of male violence can be anybody. Because it's all men, until it's no men.

It has to stop. Nobody is entitled to another person's body under any circumstance.

I have experienced similar things on multiple occasions other than the two I've just spoken about. Men not respecting consent during a negotiated interaction. Testing the boundaries we've established because I'm already there, or he's already here.

I'm sharing this because the stereotype of men preying on the vulnerable extends to everybody. Obviously, women are disproportionately affected by gendered violence. But the problem remains with men. It's all men, until it's no men. It's ALL men. Until it's NO men.

Again, I didn't, couldn't, tell anybody. I felt like it was my fault, I should have known better than to trust a stranger. I didn't feel like I could tell my therapist, my parents, or my boss even; that he was outside and watching me.

Afterwards, I blocked him on every platform. Cut contact completely. That didn't stop him from turning up at my work and standing outside, watching me through the glass windows. I worked at a pizza shop at the time.

It worked. But again, I still live with that twenty years later.

While there, he cornered me in his private office, and forced himself on me. I was already 6'6" and a big guy, but I froze. I couldn't stop him or get out of there. I figured, going along with what he wanted would mean I could get out of there faster.

In reality, he was saying what I wanted to hear. Giving me a false sense of security. He invited me to his factory to see the printing process from beginning to end. I accepted.

He promised me exposure, getting my work onto clothing that people would love. Again, I was seventeen. I believed him. We met once over coffee with my portfolio in hand, and he promised me a glittering future.

Fast forward, I'm seventeen. Studying graphic design at TAFE, working on some cool designs and envisioning my career. He was in his fifties. He owned a printing business dedicated to garment printing using a technique that was relatively new in Australia.

But this was an adult and a child. I could not consent. He should have known better.

Why? Because I know that I initiated. I felt it was my fault. This carried on for several years until I went no contact with that side of the family. I have to live with that conflict twenty plus years later. It feels like I'm not truly a victim because at the time I felt like I wanted it.

But that's beside the point. This person encouraged me to "explore" with him and perform sexual acts on him. At the time, I thought I was being mature and grown up. Looking back, that was a legal adult taking advantage of a minor. I never told anybody.

The first time, I was around 14/15. Accepting, but still exploring and confused, about my sexuality. He was a few years my senior. A family member. I don't remember the specifics of how it began.

I've seen other men speaking up about their own experiences and being told "now is not the time for men to speak”. There is never, seemingly, a correct time for men to speak. But what you need to realise is that male violence and patriarchy affects us all.

Starlight has a very personal place in my family’s story. My sister spent a lot of time in hospital when we were growing up, and Starlight brought some much-needed happiness into an otherwise incredibly difficult part of our lives.
