And here's January's TBR fitting the ✨ unfinished business ✨ theme All NetGalley ARCs that have already released 🤦‍♂️ - we'll see how I get on with these, and if I can start my reading goal for the year in earnest 💖

The Ordeals by Rachel Greenlaw

-Synopsis-

In this lush, atmospheric romantasy, an illusionist competes in a series of deadly trials for a spot at an elite magical college—that is, if another hopeful doesn’t kill her first.

Twenty-year-old Sophia DeWinter has only known life bound to her cruel uncle, the Collector, thanks to a blood bond he exacted from her as a child. When she learns of Killmarth College, an elite academy for magic wielders outside of the Collector’s control, she knows it is her only chance to finally break free. But to gain entry, she will have to compete against other illusionists, masquiers, botanists, and alchemists in a series of brutal trials that many hopefuls don’t survive—the Ordeals.

Sophia knows her skills as an illusionist are weak; she only makes it through the first challenge by teaming up with a powerful (and insufferably sexy) botanist, Alden Locke. To make it out alive, she will have to hone her magic and learn to identify who is a rival, who could be an ally, and who is a murderer.

Because now, not only does she have to protect her heart, but her very life. Hopefuls are being viciously picked off one by one between the challenges. In her haste to escape the Collector’s trap, Sophia may have fled straight towards her own death sentence

No Women Were Harmed by Heather Mottershead

-Synopsis-

And so, I am mad after all...The shackles gouge my wrists, disturbing the scars of Strangeways Prison's fetters. But no matter; if I bleed, I will not I am already dead.

Named after the funeral flower, Lily has walked hand-in-hand with death for as long as she can remember.

But the fact that death has chosen to follow her through life can hardly be conceived as her fault.

Certainly she cannot be expected to take the blame for the slew of missing men in her wake.

In fact, Lily is in no doubt that there has been some terrible mistake, and she will be released from this asylum any day now.

Now she just needs to convince you too...

Set against the harsh realities of a Victorian asylum, this compelling historical debut sees one unruly woman take her revenge on the men who would keep her caged, and ultimately asks where we draw the line between villain and victim in a society where the odds are stacked against women from the start.

The Vanishing Act by Jo Jakeman

-Synopsis-

Life as a missing person is absolute murder...

When artist Eloise Ford hears that human remains found in an abandoned mine are believed to be those of long-missing teenager Elizabeth King, the shock sends her reeling.

It can't be true. Eloise knows this for a fact because... she is Elizabeth King.

Now, her carefully curated life in Cornwall is falling apart. Her husband is acting strangely, her children aren't speaking to her and she can't sell a painting for love nor money. But much more worrying are the signs that someone knows exactly who she is... and why she had to vanish thirty years ago.

Eloise needs answers. Is her son's ex-girlfriend just plain annoying... or does she know something? Will the detection skills of the online 'Truth Seekers' group prove more than amateurish? What's the real story behind those village newcomers?

And just how far would she go to keep her family, her friends, and her fraudulent life, safe?

ITCH! by Gemma Amor

-Synopsis-

Josie is at rock bottom. Burned out and recovering from an abusive relationship, she lives a haunted existence after returning to her isolated hometown on the edge of the Forest of Dean.

But the tall, dense pine trees are not the only things casting shadows across her skin.

When Josie stumbles across a dead woman's decaying, ant-infested body in the woods, she plummets into a downward spiral, facing uncomfortable truths about the victim and her own past - all whilst battling the swarming black ants that seem to have burrowed into her mind . . . and her flesh.

Struggling with infestations of all kinds, Josie scratches the surface of an age-old mystery - a masked predator stalks the forest around Ellwood, a place deeply gripped by folklore and strange customs. As the village prepares for its annual festival, Josie gets closer and closer to unveiling a monster, and begins to ask

Are these dark crawling insects leading her to uncover the truth? Or is she their next victim?

Not too much variance from last month's Spotify Wrapped, but here's my 2025 lastfm stats 🤘🎵 #musicsky

I listened to a lot of music, and somehow settle on pirates and girly pop 😅

I only missed a couple of days of listening in the entire year 🙂‍↕️

My top tracks - I'm sensing a theme here 🤭

Second order of business for the end of the year... 🎶 My albums of the year! 🎶 I swear I tried to make a top 10, but everything past number 5 was too close to call, so I ended up with a top 40 😅 Checking out new releases every week and sharing with @underlevelqueen.bsky.social has been the best 💖

My top 40 albums of 2025 - an incredible year, and there are still tons that didn't make the cut for this post
