More and more people I deeply respect and have learned a lot from over the years feel like they are speaking into a void, to the point where they are losing motivation to continue making content, which got me to write my first post on my site in over a year... www.kevinpowell.co/article/tell...

We recently created a new recipe for our internal WebGL library that provides a way to attach WebGL programs to DOM elements (inspired by curtains.js). This opens up a lot of options for us on internal projects.

I've wanted to make this for quite some time; a WebGPU sand simulator using compute shaders and persistent states (none of the messy WebGL texture workarounds). it turned out to be surprisingly solid (even if there *are* some funny limitations like sand sitting on water).

Shipping something that's been lingering in my git for years feels weird and good. RYBitten: a little love letter to the RYB color space. color cubes, ramps, spectral mixing, all the stuff i couldn't stop tinkering with. rybitten.space heads up: non-retina looks rough and mobile is untested.

I've been reading Shadow & Claw by Gene Wolf, and I'm struggling with it. It feels almost like Canterbury Tales if it were written by Tarantino, which should be amazing, but I'm just having difficulty finding the motivation to pick it up every day.

Position queries & voxel finding in Heerich.js 0.13: huge thanks to @liamegan.bsky.social for making this happen. Honestly a bit surreal. This started as something personal and it’s now growing through other people’s contributions. Grateful it resonates the way it does 💛 meodai.github.io/heerich/

So much of the online AI discourse just sounds like performative rationalization. "AI means I can forget syntax and focus on engineering". How frequently are you just blindly accepting Claude's changes?

Dear pen plotters: toSVG({ occlusion: true }). That's it. Heerich now removes hidden faces from your SVG so your plotter only draws what's actually visible. (check the readme: github.com/meodai/heeri... for more info)

An extension of this from yesterday, pulling from an old bag of tricks. This one adds a second geometry "on top" of the original and renders an additively blended volumetric raymarch from the rear of the object to the front, lending the object a sense of depth and magic.

Pretty simple "magic gem" mesh using Three.js convex hull and TSL for materials. This sort of object has always been satisfying to me. Really simple stuff.

Three.js TSL is incredible. Really only just getting started with it, but spinning up a raymarcher on a fixed primitive, using built-in properties was simple. #threejs #raymarching #TSL

Interactive ripples on a surface look like they should be complicated to program, but they're not. This is a great example of a system emerging from a simple set of rules. 3 values per point, 1 rule for neighbours. That's it. www.surface-detail.com/posts/waves-...

Sometimes I feel so alone in my dislike of Tailwind. So many other developers I speak with almost drool over it, citing how quickly they can work, how powerful they feel when using it. But I see two problems:

I'm three episodes into Startrek Academy and I'm just finding it... Boring? The main character feels like the very worst zoomer stereotypes, the robots feel very Lucasian, and the story, so far, doesn't inspire. Am I missing something? Does it get better?

Made the second one of these this morning, which is the same thing, but with two linked together. It's always cool seeing these systems come together, where this kind of complex behaviour grows from relatively simple systems.

It's a little thing, but I wrote this demo for an upcoming article I'm writing and, after playing with it in its basic form, just rabbit-holed into making it more kinetic with some motion blur, stretching etc. It feels so nice to play with.

I think my best ideas often come from moments of silence and boredom. Taking a step back and stopping can help clear the noise. It's something I need to remind myself of; to take the time to shut down all the stimuli for a while.
