Andy Burnham’s conference speech did something important. It gave Labour a moral account of national decline. But that conference story now needs a second act: a plan that meets the changing world and readies the nation for the future. New Substack: tinyurl.com/3sz9ad9h

Just last week, we heard the news that Ward End Fire Station is facing closure. Now we’re hearing that Sheldon Fire Station could lose its night-time service. We cannot keep reducing the emergency services our communities rely on and simply expect residents to accept it.

Westminster Diary: JLR cuts blow to workers, families and communities
Jaguar Land Rover is cutting up to 4,000 jobs over the next two years, most of them among its 26,000 salaried and management staff, as part of a £1. 7billion cost reduction programme

Up to 4,000 jobs going at JLR is a body blow to every family and supplier that depends on it across our region. In my Solihull Observer column this week, I set out what I've pressed the Minister for, and why the people who built this industry deserve a country that backs them.

4,000 jobs to go at Jaguar Land Rover. West Midlands Mayor, Richard Parker, had £500,000 on the table by Monday. I asked the minister to back him if more is needed – and crucially – to bring down energy costs and to act on over-subsidised Chinese cars. Here’s our exchange:
