On-surface chemistry can overcome the limitations of in-solution synthesis but so far has been limited to metal substrates and unconventional mechanisms, thereby precluding a direct transposition of classic organic reactions. Herein, the authors report the photoinduced deoxygenation of dibenzothiophene S-oxide on insulating alkali halide surfaces in ultra-high vacuum.
