A present-day epilogue: after nearly 20 years of looking for homes abroad, I expected finding an apartment in Italy to be easier. It wasn’t. One observation is not a field experiment, of course, but I suspect our furry friend did not help. 7/7

By the time it landed in Land Economics—no pun intended—I had moved from university academia to a research position at STATEC in Luxembourg and was navigating publication in a very different institutional setting. I remain very proud of this one. 6/7

Pet ownership was already rising when I conducted the experiment, but it was nowhere near as common as it is today. I also see the paper as a lesson in how strategy, timing, and academic guidance shape a project and its path to publication. 5/7

The results differed, however, when a real-estate agency was involved. Over the years, the study has been cited in economics, sociology, architecture, civil engineering, and even reports by U.S. government agencies. 4/7

The subject seemed unusual at the time, but I thought it was worth pursuing. Using a field experiment, I found that apartment owners were less likely to invite applicants with dogs to view a property—even when the dog was a guide dog. 3/7

Are dog owners discriminated against in the rental housing market? And are blind tenants who rely on guide dogs treated any differently? The paper: le.uwpress.org/content/93/4... 2/7

Disability Discrimination in the Italian Rental Housing Market: A Field Experiment with Blind Tenants
I test discrimination against blind tenants assisted by guide dogs in the Italian rental housing market by using fake application letters. I compare three fictitious household tenants: married couples, married couples where the wife is blind and owns a guide dog, and married couples where the normal-sighted wife owns a normal dog. I find that the households with a blind wife are invited less often to visit apartments they applied for, because of the presence of their guide dog; using the language of Italian and E.U. laws, this behavior is called indirect discrimination against disabled people. This result is robust. (JEL R21)

Today is International Dog Day—what better moment to revisit my old job-market paper? While visiting UCI in California, I wanted to work on a question that had received very little attention. Somehow—I no longer remember exactly how—I arrived at two: 1/7

But set backs are always behind the corner. Last year, an editor rejected a paper of mine after R&R2 with minor revisions from the refs, at a top behav econ journal. it was excruciating, it hurt, but he editor was right, seriously, i m not sarcastic. 2/4

the most exciting match I have ever seen, as an Inter FC fan, was probably not the recent 3-3 with Barca, but the 1-0 loss at camp nou. So much tension, we were doing our best, one man down and arguably less skilled, one wrong move and it could have been the end of it all

Reach out - to me, to a trusted colleague, or to specialists. Don't let the silence and guilt convince you that you’re failing at "normal." You're running the same race with extra weight most people don't see. 6/7

Through things like the (now defunct) Neurodivergent Economists Group and AEA/EEA sessions, I've seen how common this actually is. If you're reading this and dealing with tinnitus, ADHD, anxiety, mood regulation issues, or anything similar… you're not alone. 5/7

Many have quietly left academia or research because of the brutal, world-level competition. Others are still here but struggling in silence, carrying meaningless guilt: "Not working enough." "Not determined enough." "Can’t keep up." "Can’t even sleep or have fun when they're 'supposed to.'" 3/7

Despite that extra weight, I've built a life and a career I'm genuinely happy with - even as an overachiever. But I keep meeting people - at least as talented as me - who live with similar neurodivergent conditions and stay completely silent about them. 2/7

I've rarely said this openly: for 20 years I've lived with a constant ~12 kHz tinnitus. It’s an intrusive sound that never stops. It steers my concentration, my sleep, my moods, and my ability to unwind — whether I want it to or not. My career has been shaped by it more than I’ve ever admitted. 1/7

I sense some underlying pessimism… I think I share it, but I’m slightly more optimistic: I've just entered the future myself and got my first plasticized, microchipped Italian ID. It feels like I'm in a sci‑fi movie. Until few weeks ago, I had a paper ID, with a sweat‑fogged photo.

Ever wonder why meetings and conferences derail so easily? Turns out there could be literal saboteurs — at least according to the CIA in 1944. See p. 28 of the Simple Sabotage Field Manual: www.cia.gov/static/5c875... (Apologies to whoever posted this first; I’d credit you if my memory cooperated)

The Economics of Age at School Entry: Insights from Evidence and Methods
(Forthcoming Article) - This article reviews the growing literature on age at school entry and its effects over the life course. Age at school entry affects a broad range of outcomes, including education, labor-market performance, health, social relationships, and family formation. We synthesize the evidence using a conceptual framework that distinguishes four empirically intertwined components of age at school entry: starting age, age at outcome, relative age, and time in school. Within this framework, we highlight six key channels through which age at school entry operates. While the effects of age at school entry are often substantial and persistent, many studies estimate bundled impacts without isolating specific components or directly measuring underlying mechanisms. We explain how different research designs capture distinct combinations of these components. We also highlight how institutional heterogeneity and behavioral responses can complicate the interpretation of results. We conclude by outlining directions for future research and policy design.

For policymakers: ASE effects are real, multidimensional, and often long-lasting. And, we suspect, researchers are still just scratching the surface. 8/9

Relative age is the most underappreciated component. Its effects are especially sticky in: 🔹 Behavioral assessments 🔹 ADHD diagnoses 🔹 Special education placement Why? As a possible answer, schools benchmark kids against classmates — not against developmental norms. 6/9

Luca Fumarco @lfumarco.bsky.social · 06/03/2026
A central insight: most ASE estimates are composite effects. Even clean RDD designs with grade-level outcomes bundle multiple components mechanically. Knowing the exact source of variation is essential for results interpretation. 5/9

Luca Fumarco @lfumarco.bsky.social · 06/03/2026
Methods matter — a lot. We walk through 2SLS, RDD, DiD, and reduced-form approaches, and clarify what each design actually identifies (and what it doesn't). Cross-jurisdiction variation matters too — tracking systems, diagnostic rules, dropout policies — is often underused and underappreciated. 4/9

Luca Fumarco @lfumarco.bsky.social · 06/03/2026
We propose a clean conceptual framework. ASE has four distinct components: → Starting-age (maturity at entry) → Age-at-outcome (how old you are when measured) → Relative-age (your rank within the class) → Time-in-school (cumulative exposure) And they have an impact through various channels. 3/9

Being slightly older/younger when you start school matters. Age at school entry (ASE) shapes: 📚 Educational attainment 💼 Earnings & employment 🧠 Mental & physical health 👥 Social relationships ⚖️ Crime 💍 Family formation Economists largely ignored this topic for decades. Not anymore. 2/9
