Day 3 Update: Took a break yesterday hence no update, but today I got a pretty cool video for you all to check out instead of meme gifs! Boat now can now accelerate, reverse and turn, and you can control the camera + switch between three different perspectives! Boat Game is officially playable!

I was just wanting to find out how much a boat weighs so I can correctly set mass for my boat in UE5, and here I am browsing actual shipyards and researching what is the difference between Displacement, Gross Tonnage, and Deadweight. Boats yo. Who knew.

At the end of the day, games are really hard to make, especially at really massive scales. It would be nice to be more open about the process because I personally find it fascinating, but it requires a certain amount of grace and understanding from players instead of outright outrage.

By the time the game releases, so many cuts could be made to that feature: Enemies may only be pulled towards the player to prevent them from being thrown off navigation, objects may not be dynamically destructible for perf optimization, or cut entirely because it doesnt the combat loop well.

For example let's just say in a made-up Castlevania trailer, you see the protagonist use the whip to grapple a character and throw them into a box, which shatters into a million pieces. That feature may seem simple, but it interacts with so many systems: AI, Nav, Animation, Character, Physics, etc.

The intention is never to deceive. If something ends up in the trailer, it likely means that at the time there was real confidence that feature was going to shipping. However, its easy to get a feature to the point it looks good; shipping it fully functional is what takes a lot of work.

The reaction to the Perfect Dark demo and accusation of "fakeness" makes me wonder if we should be more or less transparent about how the sausage is made. I think the average person would be shocked at all the tricks we as devs pull to make sure something shows well while it's still in development.

I miss being able to replay games. I've probably completed Spider-Man on PS1 about 12 times since it's a breezy 2-4 hour experience. Compare that to something like Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Love that game, but it's 70 hours. I'm only gonna see all your expensive bespoke content once :<

SIMS 1 is a horror game where you play as Sim that has become self-aware but the player is trying to end their life by removing pool ladders, locking them in rooms with no doors, etc., but the Sim can access console commands as well.

It did get nominated for three awards though! That's probably more than we can expect from the Academy. Heck, I wouldn't even expect Hugh Grant to get a nod for Heretic. I think there is also an argument to be made for SH2 Remake not being a contender, but I do realize I'm more critical of it.

I worry that maybe the story there is less interesting than we think! Probably a case of licensing the game put to a publisher, and then from that point it's all hands off and the original devs just have no buy in. "What sells in North America? Girls? Guns? Okay slap both on there, let's go home"

We should really stop scoring games. Imagine arguing scores for Mona Lisa vs The Raft of the Medusa. The latter, surely, a 10/10. But the Mona Lisa is so much smaller, with only one portrait. How could that be a 10/10 also? It's ludicrous. Anyway, you should play Hellblade 2!
