Charles Denby, a fake name, real name Simon Owens, was a sharecropper in Alabama who later worked in Detroit auto. He was part of a Trotskyist group and edited paper called News and Letters. Historians, anything else I should read about him? I first learned about him in Jason Resnikoff’s book.

The crisis of democracy is one of profound social inequality. What’s happening today with the capitalist capture of the political and economic realms of society surpasses the wettest dreams of Gilded Age-era tycoons.

Breaking: Educators at bilingual schools in Minneapolis did a sickout today. Federal agents continue to kidnap children. Two more students have been taken from Liam Ramos’s Columbia Heights School. Educators are saying enough! Message below is from the district to parents.
As there is a National Shutdown Day tomorrow, Friday, January 30, staffing might be an issue at Green. We are planning a modified schedule for students. Your student might not have their homeroom teacher, so please talk to your child so they are prepared. The school will be open.
Thank you!

Hundreds of people gather for a vigil at the site where 37-year-old Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse and member of AFGE 3669, was shot and killed by federal agents.

AFGE Local 3669 statement:
We have received confirmation that a member of AFGE Local 3669, Alex J. Pretti, was the man killed during the incident. At this time, many of the details remain unclear. Video of the incident is circulating on social media, and the Department of Homeland Security has publicly stated that the victim was brandishing a weapon at officers. However, based on the video currently available, that claim is not clearly established.

We just recently discovered that the officer involved was a Border Patrol officer and we are still not certain if he was a member of AFGE.

This is an unfolding and extremely serious matter. Until we have verified facts, it is important that we refrain from speculation or drawing conclusions.

What we do know is this: a member of our union lost their life today, and that alone is devastating. Our hearts are heavy, and we are deeply stricken by this tragedy that has befallen one of our own.

Until more information becomes available, I urge everyone to remain calm and encourage peace and restraint in all communications and actions. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will share additional information as soon as we are able to confirm it.

It’s a tragedy that a significant chunk of the country hasn’t woken up to the horror of a federal government throwing tear gas at people pushing a walker. The people standing up to these federal agents are regular people fed up with living under a military occupation.

Breaking: Three unions are calling on the University of Minnesota to shut down for Jan. 23. They include the Graduate Labor Union Electrical Workers Local 1105, AFSCME 3800, & Teamsters Local 320. Campus undergraduate organizations are joining the call. labornotes.org/2026/01/will...
You are invited to attend a press conference where the University of Minnesota Graduate Labor Union (GLU-UE Local 1105) and other UMN campus workers and students will call on the president of the UMN to close all campuses on January 23rd for the ICE OUT! Day of Action.

WHAT: GLU-UE Local 1105 and other University of Minnesota workers and student groups are calling for the UMN to shut down on January 23rd so that workers and students can participate in the ICE OUT! Day of Action march in Minneapolis on 1/23/26.
WHO: Executive board of GLU-UE Local 1105, worker leaders from AFSCME 3800, Teamsters 320, and campus undergraduate organizations.
WHEN: Wednesday, 1/21/26, at 11AM.
WHERE: Eastern Steps of Johnston Hall.
WHY: ICE is terrorizing our communities and killing people in our streets. Over 50 unions and other Twin Cities organizations have called for a general strike on 1/23 to kick ICE out of MN and end the racists attacks on our communities. Workers and students at the UMN want to participate in this Day of Action and if UMN cancelled classes, closed campuses, and provided a paid holiday to workers, it would enable this community to participate in this momentous march to get ICE out of MN.

@jamellebouie.net has a great piece in NYT about Trump’s war of attrition. I made similar argument in @inthesetimes.com in February. inthesetimes.com/article/labo...
Screen shot from ITT article linked bring all of this up because I have been thinking about the Confederacy’s theory of victory in the context of the Trump administration’s attempt to consolidate a personalist, authoritarian regime. The similarities lie in the importance of speed. To effect his desired transformation, President Trump had to fight a multi-front war — he had to either overwhelm his opponents or, if they did not break after the first charge, bleed them dry with a constant stream of attacks.

Oct 29 2025

Supermajority of Volkswagen Workers in Chattanooga Vote to Authorize Strike for Job Security and a Fair Contract
Chattanooga, TN – Volkswagen workers in Chattanooga have voted to authorize a strike against the German automaker after over a year of contract negotiations have failed to produce a fair contract offer. It is a historic first, as the first strike authorization vote at a non-Big Three automaker in the modern era.

The move comes after months of unfair labor practices committed by the company, including bad faith negotiations, unlawful intimidation, and the unilateral cutting of jobs at Volkswagen’s only U.S. assembly plant.
