Everyone else went quiet about tabletop last month. I made a little noise instead, and it's all collected now in one place. That's the entire trick, really — just do the thing, day after day, and then point at it. →

One theme word a day, and each one became something: characters built off the cuff, short solos run through, systems kicked around and ranked. It runs from the Discipline that opened the whole thing to the Pride that closed it, with a bonus Edge lobbed in for good measure. →

RPG a Day isn't supposed to happen in September. My calendar had other ideas, so the month-long celebration of a hobby got flipped on its head and turned into thirty straight days of prompts, characters, scenarios, and — let's be honest — a few arguments I picked for the sheer fun of it. →

I love theater of the mind because it lets me do things like that, keying off of the description and the fiction rather than trying to track a whole bunch of individual little numbers which really aren't related to what's going on. →

Step that Challenge rank down one, back to Dangerous. You'll be able to hold out longer because you're not trying to kill them out of hand, you're just trying to hold them back you succeed filling up your Challenge Rank. →

10 goblins? Now we're talking! Now it's a large pack of goblins, and it goes up by two ranks over what one alone might be. This is a Formidable Challenge Rank. It's going to take some serious work to take out that whole group. You can do it, but it's going to be costly. →

Random #TTRPG idea: Urban fantasy setting where magic is rediscovered but the only magic is necromancy. So people start using it to extend their lives. Becoming various types of undead.

Put it onto the base at its minimum extension and you have one level up. Extend it one segment at a time. Now you can position the mini in 3D space pretty much anywhere you want to.

You mean without expensive plastic bases? You're always going to have to have some sort of base if you have a miniature, but there was one idea in a game system that I really enjoyed, which I thought was underutilized elsewhere: car antennas.

If you can frame it such that the power itself tempts them to reframe their understanding of the situation such that it disadvantages them further, even better. You let the players find the horror.

Alexander "SquidLord" Williams @lextenebris.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
In fact, once you understand it, you can allow the characters to have quite a lot of power. It's just that that power is orthogonal to anything that would affect their situation. They just don't know it yet.

Alexander "SquidLord" Williams @lextenebris.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
I always prefer horror that involves smart characters who are capable and making the best decisions they can. However, they are limited by the information they have and the contexts that they have learned. This works particularly well in RPGs.
100
Alexander "SquidLord" Williams @lextenebris.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Let them find the horror. Let them step into the horror. Let them realize they're surrounded by the horror. While they do have utter agency to do whatever they choose, the outcomes are where the horror lies.
100
Alexander "SquidLord" Williams @lextenebris.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
If it's horrible, it'll be horrible whether they have agency or not, because their agency will contrast their lack of situational advantage.
100
Alexander "SquidLord" Williams @lextenebris.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
The real secret to doing good horror is to not want to take them on a tightly guided tour. Instead, let your horror speak for itself and put them in a situation within the context of it.
