Big news that a flagship CCUS project collapsed last June with Air Products' shutdown of a massive "blue ammonia" project in Ascension Parish, LA. The gases giant took $3 billion in losses without even breaking ground. Check out my interview on what happened with Kaitlyn Joshua from Earthworks:

Yes, CCUS was invented for Enhanced Oil Recovery decades ago and it's still about more EOR: the so-called One Big Beautfiful Bill Act jacked up the CCUS "utilization" rate (aka EOR) to $85 per ton, for parity with the permanent sequestration credit rate.

Lew Daly @lewdaly.bsky.social · 23/12/2025
Larger point: 45Q is arguably the most perverse energy subsidy from a climate pespective. Govt paying corporations to capture and store CO2, instead of actually reducing emissions, means incentivizing more extraction and combustion of fossil fuels because more emissions means more public $.

TAXPAYER COSTS FOR CARBON CAPTURE, UTILIZATION, AND STORAGE – Just Solutions
The 45Q tax credit expansion for Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage, passed as part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, dramatically increases the expected cost to taxpayers without adequate oversight or transparency to ensure fiscal integrity or program efficacy. Independent analyses suggest tax subsidies could average $46 billion per year—more than 140 times the original official projections. Total costs could reach as high as $835 billion by 2042; and were industry-proposed expansions implemented, the taxpayer cost could surge above $2 trillion. With lax oversight, little transparency, and most credits funding enhanced oil recovery rather than true carbon reduction, the risks to taxpayers are enormous. This report examines the 45Q program’s potential fiscal impacts and the urgent need for reform of this flawed federal subsidy.
