I used to work in academic publishing, and the number of authors (and editors!) who thought something available on the internet made it public domain was unbelievable. One colleague wanted to use a MLK op-ed in a newspaper because it was "public domain." Just, don't include MLK stuff.

So ... if Watson had gotten his paws on 49 instead of 51, would he have been able to determine the helical structure from it? Franklin could, but she was a crystallographer. Would Watson have needed the cleaner version? (Impossible to say for sure, obviously.)

He reminds me of Hercule Poirot. I'm sure he solves mysteries in his spare time.

There is (of course) a Row 1, Section 109 at the Univ of Maryland arena.

I consider "How Kenny Loggins Ruined Christmas" one of the great works of literature of the 21st century. Also Wolves. Genius.

Song: The National Anthem Album: probably OK Computer, but I've been listening to In Rainbows a lot lately

Yes! I think I've read all the Nero Wolfe books a dozen times each. I wanted to be Archie or Saul Panzer when I was younger.

Very tangential, but for awhile the local grocery store chain was advertising it's take home dinner kits with the tagging "what's in the box?" But not for long.

I'm not sure I'll be able to watch this. One of my many anxieties in grad school was getting crushed in the rolling stacks (which were new at the time.) No, I didn't finish my dissertation -- how did you know?

I was recently the "person listening to something loudly on a plane." I thought I was listening to music through my headphones, but the cable had failed, and I was listening to my phone speakers REALLY LOUD. The flight attendant told me. Worse, I was playing Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz.

That's right. I read Blue Heaven way back when because it was on some list of books that were most like Wodehouse, and I was (and am) a huge Wodehouse fan. And it was! Hysterical book!

Don't your characters in the novel bond over a Wodehouse novel? It's been a long time since I read it.

I have every color of a particular LL Bean t-shirt and most of the patterns of their flannel shirts. I like them. They fit. Why would I get anything different?

Yeah, you're right. And, likely, listening to such a hypothetical episode, I'll have learned a lot about the topic and have developed a grudging respect for someone I'd never heard of before.

Of course, I reserve the right to change my view if there's an episode on Starship's "We Built this City." 🙂

I've said this before, but I've always felt that the name of the podcast was very carefully chosen. It's not a podcast of the songs, but it uses the songs to tell the history of rock music - just like the title says. So listeners should EXPECT some obscure or lesser songs if the advance the story.

As a big Beefheart fan and a Payreon member, I'll be spending my time until then trying to guess who the bonus will be on. All my guesses will be wrong, of course, but it'll keep me amused.

I managed to get it in 4, but only because I saw so many complaints about it on here. Never would have figured it out otherwise.

You're right!! I had just assumed that no team could possibly be worse than the Rockies.

Interesting, but it seems a bit unfair to require the Rockies to play that every year.

I love Leave it to Psmith. Something Fresh (Something New here in the US) is still good, but the Blandings books don't hit high gear until the Empress and Galahad show up. I'm reading Full Moon at the moment.

I think it looks like Carl Sagan before he applied his Brylcream. It's a rare Margolies photo with a person in it ... I wonder if there's a story behind it.

You may already know, seeing your bio, but I love to recommend the Nigerien guitarist/band Mdou Moctar. Lyrics are in French, I think, but I listen for the guitar and amazing drummer.

This happened to me a few years ago -- fire started in the middle of the night, firefighters rescued the cats from the smoke and revived them with the little kitty oxygen mask. The firefighters were SO good and serious about it. I like to say it was adorably traumatic.

I recently did something similar on a plane. I thought my headphones were plugged in, but they weren't, and instead my music was blaring out of my phone and the entire plane could hear. I was listening to Ornette Coleman's "Free Jazz" album at the time.

A set of German postage stamps either promoting accident prevention or providing nightmare fuel.

I sometimes watch just the first scene of them gathering in the conference room. The characters are perfectly clear without a word being said.

I tell people that I don't trade seats because it would make it more difficult for investigators to identify my remains when the plane crashes. That usually ends the discussion.

Ah, that makes sense. The terminal I flew out of Detroit is pretty new --2010 or so. Thanks for answering.

Is there a reason some airports are impacted so badly? I just flew to Detroit and back to Denver, and both airports had short lines and were running smoothly. (Well, except when to power went out last week when I was flying out of DIA.)

I'm always surprised at how important for me is the sound quality of a podcast, even non-music ones. And jolly banter is hard to do well and sound professional. I listen to podcasts because I don't want to listen to the inane chat of people around me.
