After joining the Senate in 1940, Harry Truman drove 10,000 miles inspecting military spending. Alarmed by the waste, he helped establish the bipartisan Truman Committee, whose investigations saved an estimated $10–15 billion—and thousands of lives.

In 1932, the Senate launched an investigation into the 1929 stock market crash. After hiring Ferdinand Pecora in 1933, the inquiry took off. Pecora personally served subpoenas and waited for documents. The investigation laid the foundation for sweeping financial reforms.
