Throwback to the time I memed one of my own papers - Kibbe & Leslie (2011) (it's a little niche, but iykyn) #cogdevmemes #devpsych #cogpsych #psychscisky
Meme of a man walking with his girlfriend, checks out another woman while his girlfriend looks on angrily. The man is labeled "6-month-olds", the girlfriend is labeled "object's features" and the woman he is checking out is labeled "object's existence"

Are you sleeping meme format: In the first panel, a brain with eyes says, "Hey are you going to sleep?" In the second panel, a person with eyes closed says "Yes, now be quiet". In the third panel, the brain says "Many modern intro psych textbooks still teach that infants don't have object permanence even though that was debunked in the 1980s". In the fourth panel, the person in bed has their eyes wide open.

To celebrate deleting my twitter, I'm reposting some of my classic cognitive development memes from the other site. First, one of my all-time faves
Two choices meme - one button says "Where Sally thinks the marble is" and the other button says "Where the marble actually is". The sweating man who is tasked with making the choice between the two buttons is labeled "3-year-olds"

I have absolutely no regrets about this incredible Lord of the Rings pun that my grad advisor came up with for our paper on whether infants bind topology (rings vs. solids) to object representations
Title: "The ring that does not bind: Topological class in infants' working memory for objects" by Melissa M. Kibbe and Alan M. Leslie

Today I found out I am a robot, because there are clearly no "squares with motorcycles" in this image.
One of those "prove you aren't a robot" images that shows a grid of squares, with some containing parts of a motorcycle. Instructions are to select "all squares with motorcycles". No square contains a motorcycle.

OK, I looked up Bonatti et al. (2005) on Scholar today to cite it for something, and I am SHOCKED to see that this paper has only been cited 24 times! How is that possible?? This is one of those papers that looms large in my mind as a significant contribution to the infant lit...
Screenshot of Google Scholar reference for "What face inversion does to infants' counting abilities" by Bonatti, Frot, and Mehler, published in Psychological Science in 2005. The screenshot shows part of the abstract, and that it's been cited by 24.

New paper! @jinjingjenny1.bsky.social and I were curious about just how robust are infants' seemingly "catastrophic" failures to track sets of four or more objects, so we did a systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis, now out in Developmental Science! 1/5
Screenshot of the title and author details from the PDF "Catastrophic" set size limits on infants' capacity to represent objects: A systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis by Jinjing (Jenny) Wang and Melissa M. Kibbe, published in Developmental Science.

We tested 4-8 yos in a variation of our Cheng & Kibbe (2022) “memory game”. On some trials, all the to-be-remembered objects were visible at encoding; on others, one of the object’s identities was unknown so its identity had to be inferred by eliminating known alternatives. 3/6

New paper! Chen Cheng and I looked at children’s ability to use reasoning by exclusion to retroactively “fill in” the unknown identity of an object in working memory by ruling out known alternatives. We found some interesting results! 1/6 #devpsyc #psychscisky #neuroskyence
