An update on @letterstothegods.bsky.social's debut issue.

Letters to the Gods Left in Fireplaces @letterstothegods.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
Due to @arndtezra.bsky.social really, really struggling with physical health issues at the moment (and for the foreseeable future), we're putting the lit mag's debut on pause (more info in the slides).
Hey, we’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that we’re still planning to do this project. The bad news? We’re going to have to put the first issue on pause. I (Ezra) am going through some serious physical health issues that make daily tasks, let alone anything creative, extremely difficult. So, if you’ve submitted a piece for the debut issue, you’re welcome to do whatever you want with it (we don’t want to hold your projects hostage). The hope is to be able to reopen submissions (with a few changes to make it easier for all three editors to manage) in the late fall or the winter of 2027. But as healing and managing health isn’t linear or easy and things come up, we can’t promise anything. However, we will do our best to keep you all posted.

All of your enthusiasm and support for this project has been overwhelming in the best of ways. And we cannot wait to actually be able to properly launch this project when we’re able to do so.With all of our love, we wish you all the best and hope to see you all around (feel free to mention us on social media if you do decide to do something else with your submissions. We’d love to support you with excitement, shares, and likes).

Best,
Ezra

Sorry for being so quiet over here. We’re getting so close to the finish line (of reading the prose/poetry) that I can taste it. We will be back with more information soon. Wanted to let everyone know that we’re still doing this project/working on it when we can. Happy Pride!

I thought you all should know that us three editors are reviewing all of the nearly forty (40) submissions. All of your submissions are so nasty (/positive), and I think the deciding factor will be how well the chosen pieces mesh together.

Here's more official note on this lit mag's stance on taboo content in the art in the issues from the editor-in-chief, @arndtezra.bsky.social (text threaded below):
“A queer lit magazine where the forbidden thrives.” I started LETTERS TO THE GODS LEFT IN FIREPLACES with the intention of creating a safe space for creators of dark and queer taboo art (poetry, prose, comics, and illustrations). That hasn’t changed, by the way. On my own personal author account, I am very supportive of those creating taboo art. As a disabled queer person who not only grew up closeted due to being taught by my community and society at large to think that who I am and who I love makes me a sinner and a monster, I firmly believe that as taboo art and the artists, especially queer creators, have very powerful stories to tell... even if it’s just so-called “p/o/r/n with or without a plot.”I am aware that there are certain elements and themes within the taboo art space that make a lot of people uncomfortable. I’m not calling out them for not wanting to consume said dark pieces. I’m merely asking them not to yuck others fictional yums.

The beauty of this modern age of technology is that we can simply keep scrolling and block/mute anyone whose content we aren’t comfortable with. We can always put down said art and walk away if it makes us uncomfortable.

Afterall, not all stories and art is meant to make the reader/viewer comfortable.Especially those that reside within the Gothic genre of art, where there are heavy themes of things like dub/con, incest, and other heavy topics that are, well, taboo in real society and for good reason. I would argue that one of the whole points of Gothic art is to explore themes of corruption and forbidden decadence and share that perversion with a willing audience.

I personally tend to write from the point-of-view of characters in situations and relationships where it is extremely toxic, dangerous, and they romanticize/eroticize it. However, even though I write about people-eating and abusive relationships doesn’t mean that in real life I condone it or participate in such activities. Just as I assume anyone who writes about murder wouldn’t go around knocking people off.All that being said, when it comes to all forms of taboo content within any Letters to the Gods Left in Fireplaces issue, there will be a content notice for that listed on the website, www.letterstothegods.com. If you can’t find it, you can always reach out to the team on Instagram and Bluesky under (at) letterstothegods or email us at letterstothegodsteam (at) gmail (dot) com.

Be kind to each other, okay? We’re all just trying to live our lives, and if you don’t like how someone else is living theirs, as long as they aren’t harming themselves or others, who cares?

Best,
Ezra (they/them/theirs)

A brief thread on Gothic themes, including incest, in fictional contexts, and how this taboo lit magazine will more than likely have content that some readers may not like (and that's okay, just skip whatever issue that has those topics in it, but please stop yucking each other's fictional yums).
