I am embarrassed as a JP speaker. This kind of baseless harassment is REALLY harmful to the genuine ones too. Because ppl will remember this chibi thing being a bullshit, the next genuine attempt of spreading awareness of smth like cultural appropriation will be met with some skepticism. Shame.

About their claim of "Chibi is an insult, but you can use chibi-chara, chibi-style, etc..": There's no conjugation rule that actually changes the meaning of a word. But I will say using "chibi-chara" will definitely clarify the context being not insulting. But also, your art already does that job.

I made a thread about "chibi" to try to explain. Of course, people can and should be able to disagree with me. Granted to fair information and context. And as much as I am biased (I am a living human being so) I tried to be open and honest about it. the ppl whos been attacked deserve some context.

But as a fluent Jp speaker, I find their behavior rather concerning. Bc they oversimplify the truth to police a word. And they just pop up and declare that chibi is an insult w/o any sources or explanations. Even if their deed is righteous, I believe this is an irresponsible way to go at it.

RP appreciated🧵 There has been this recent event in which if you post a chibi art and if you dare to call it chibi that it is, there will probably be this account in reply saying "chibi in Japanese is an insult. Stop using it. Use 'chibi-chara' instead" I think the person genuinely believes this.

Thank you for the reply! IDK why this person is doing it. I have already pointed out while they themselves might have been traumatized by getting bullied with the word, the word itself has many non-insult usages and chibi (as art) is one of them. They agreed and yet they don't quit spamming ppl...😔🤦

as a Japanese person, I think it is OK for you to use the word!! Your understanding is absolutely correct. While in japanese it CAN be offensive in SOME contexts, "chibi" in english is exclusively about the art style. Using the hashtag with your chibi art makes the non-insult context even clearer.

oh omg i ignored you asked for explanation. my apology. it means short/small/young depending on the context. its like the eng word "fat" as in it CAN BE used as an insult. but it is impossible to say the word itself is Inherently insulting (while some conjugations somehow can wash off the badness)
