236) Avengers Undercover vol.2 (END) by Hopeless/Walker/Walker/Green II and more A perfectly fine end, but it feels like this was supposed to go way longer. Time skip a good tool to crib from manga, at the least. Overall, good run, wish it was followed up on properly.
The cover to Avengers Undercover, as digitally rendered by Francesco Mattina. Death Locket, maybe gonna shoot Captain America?

235) Uncanny X-Men vol.3 by Simone/Vecchio/Marquez/Rosenberg/Wilson/Cowles For a very scattershot volume this felt amazing. Bunch of smaller stories that make everything and everyone in them feel richer. The best Uncanny has felt in a long time, you love to see it.
The cover to Uncanny X-Men: Murder Me, Mutina. Mutina versus X-Men.

234) Avengers Undercover vol.1 by Hopeless/Walker/Green II and more A surprisingly effective follow-up to Arena, developing the cast further and giving them a new way to descend. I wish Zemo didn’t have the armband. But such is post-Thunderbolts Zemo, I guess.
The cover to Avengers Undercover: Descent as drawn by Francesco Mattina. Zemo, surrounded by Anachronism, Death Locket, little boy Bloodstone, and Hazmat.

233) Uncanny X-Men vol.2 by Simone/Marquez/Bressan/Wilson/Cowles and more This feels like the book and concept in full swing. Everyone has a story going on, the outliers feel like a genuine new mutants-level team, and the actual setting itself has come alive (ha) with the concept of the dark artery
The cover to Uncanny X-Men: The Dark Artery. Wolverine and the outliers fight sentinel dogs.

232) X-Men Legacy: Avengers vs X-Men by Gage/Sandoval/Baldeon and more A chunky end to Legacy, as Rogue has some tie-in shenanigans that go from kinda attached to wildly unrelated. This whole run suffers for following Carey, but I still like it. Rogue leading books is always good.
The cover to X-Men Legacy as drawn by Mark Brooks. Rogue and a lot of X-Men, a group cover to mark the series ending

231) Avengers Arena by Hopeless/Walker/Martin/Vitti/Gage and more I remember disliking the idea of this when it came out, but revisiting it all these years later was a thrill. Teen drama and violent trauma all rolled up into one. Arcade is apparently 29 and not 40+, which is mad shit.

230) X-Men: Raid on Graymalkin by MacKay/Simone/Stegman/Marquez and MANY others The crossover itself is just kind of okay, but the whole collection is worth it for Cyclops vs the O*N*E guy at the end. Nail-biting mutually assured destruction stuff.
The cover to Raid on Graymalkin. Rogue punching Cyclops.

229) Uncanny X-Men by Simone/Marquez/Garrón/Wilson/Cowles I'm an easy mark for any book with Rogue and Gambit leading the way, and this has charm and looks for days, so big thumbs up overall. Sometimes feels like it's making little leaps in logic that I'm not privy to, but it's early days.
The cover to Uncanny X-Men: Red Wave. Jubilee, Rogue, Wolverine, Nightcrawlerc and Gambit do the Pearl Jam hands thing, but downwards

228) Motherlover by Lindsay Ishihiro God damn but this is one of the best comics I've ever read. Beautiful work, very queer, and VERY well told. I am overflowing with emotion. HIGHLY recommended to one and all.

227) X-Men vol.1 by MacKay/Stegman/Diaz and many more A decent start to an era that couldn't have more of an uphill battle if it tried. I like the team idea of all being volatile people, feels like the extinction team dialled up to 11. Still, cautious optimism.
The cover to X-Men: Homecoming. Buncha X-Men and a person they are presumably rescuing.

226) Generation X epic 2 by Lobdell/Grummett/Bachalo and MANY more A great period for my favourite x-teens. You get melodrama, beautiful art from Bachalo and Grummett, and more than a little big of 'changing our minds as we go' plotting typical of the time. Good shit.

225) Son of Hulk: Dark Son Rising by Jenkins/Guinaldo/Beaulieu/Sharpe An inexplicable coda where side character & bonus son Hiro-Kala has been transformed by trauma into God, doing horrific things to poison Galactus for revenge. It's good enough but feels even further removed from the series' start
The cover to Dark Son Rising. Hiro-Kala on a rock in space.

224) The Amazing Spider-Man vol.3 by Kelly/JRJR/Nauck/McGuinness and many more This just straight ruled. Norman Osborn as he is now is a deeply interesting character, and his new role gives us lots to chew on. Ben Reilly is also here. JRJR’s art is a delight as always too. Just a big win all around

223) Skaar: Son of Hulk vol.2 by Pak/Guice/Lim/Panosian and many others I don’t know if this ran out of time or readers, but it feels like we skipped what could have been years of stories to destroy everything, move to Earth, and get to the big Hulk on Hulk of it all. Odd stuff, kind of a bummer.

222) The Amazing Spider-Man vol.2 by Kelly/JRJR/Dowling/Nauck and more A good brawl over most of the comic followed by a bit of intrigue that I’ve already had spoiled for me. Things are in a good swing here, I’m excited to see where it goes next.

221) Skaar: Son of Hulk by Pak/Garney/Guice/Mounts/Caramagna and SO many others Somehow an even purer pulp fantasy than Planet Hulk was, Skaar is an elemental force destroying so much in his journey, while Hiro-kala's tale is more subtle. These sons of Hulk both captivate here.

220) The Amazing Spider-Man vol.1 by Kelly/Larraz/Gracia and more Kelly's solo Spidey era starts proper with a decent story about the past and hallucinogens. I hear the run directly before this was cheeks, but this at the least feels true to the character and engaging throughout.
The cover to The Amazing Spider-Man: Get Back Up. Spidey pose on some just-okay trade dress.

219) Superman vol.7 (END) by Gleason/Tomasi/Mahnke/Godlewski and more Bizarro stories don't do much for me but this was pretty decent. Good end to the run, even if it felt like it ended, went "whoops, one issue left" and ended again. Decent run, leaned a little hard on the American spirit.
Cover to Superman: Bizarroverse. Superman and Superboy lead good Bizarros, Bizarro leads bad Bizarros. Or uh. Seap good and bad. God I hate Bizarro.

218) Superman vol.6 by Tomasi/Gleason/Mahnke/Robinson/Benes and more A decent Apokolips story that largely exists to push Luthor towards villainy again, something achieved by Superman being a bit of a jerk. Great art throughout though, and a nice Robinson fill-in arc to end it.
The cover to Superman: Imperius Lex. Superman, Lois, Superboy, and Lex in front of Apokolips, countless parademons below.

217) Superman vol.5 by Bonny/Champagne/Gleason/Tomasi/Kirkham/Godlewski/Mahnke and many more A kind of transitional volume, with lots of fill-in creators. The fill-ins are grand, with some neat Deathstroke and Parallax stuff, but the main story is a little too close to nationalism for my tastes.
The cover to Superman vol.5. Superman, Superboy, house. Lee Weeks and Brad Anderson

215) Avengers Academy complete collection 3 (END) by Gage/Grummett and others The series sort of falters here. The story is fine enough, but the art… Like I think Grummett is a legend, no doubt at all, but maybe not the best fit for this specific story. As such, uneven.

214) X-Men: Age of Apocalypse omnibus by oh shit uh oh god that’s. That’s a lot of people. Overall it’s pretty great. Hama, Nicieza, & Lobdell do the best writing, the Kuberts & Joe Mad are undoubtedly the artistic core. That it maintains continuity across titles at all feels like a miracle.

Late in the Age of Apocalypse now. Here's Larry Hama's Wolverine showing Gateway that you can't intellectualise your way past genocide. Seems. Useful.
Carol Dancers and Wolverine show Gateway the violence and horrors of Apocalypse's genocide, which Gateway tries to dismiss as being the human condition. Wolverine disagrees with this approach, showing the very real human cost beyond mere fucking anthropology, as an innocent teen girl (blonde, white, gotta sell it to the general audience) being killed by one of Apocalypse's infinites.

You simply cannot see this on the real, individual level and not be horrified by the full scope of what is inflicted during genocide. Wolverine has a digital copy of the girl's diary, proof of the fully-formed actual person that she was, one of untold millions, as all people are that die pointlessly in these cruelest of moments. He shoves it in Gateway's face. Point made.

213) X-Force epic 4 by Nicieza/Daniel and MANY more This took a while! Mostly a mess, as continuity teases get lost and confused and dropped again, and the art often misses, but by the end things are in a nice groove, Tony Daniel levels up a bunch, and we even get a great annual with Ringo on art!

212) Poison Ivy vol.6 by Wilson/Takara/Level/Ilhan/Prianto/Otsmane-Elhaou/Fong Not a great time to run out of volumes! Amazing volume, artistically brilliant and clever as always, but damn that cliffhanger is gonna drive me to madness.
The cover to Poison Ivy: A Death in Marshview

This volume in particular feels like one where we’re very aware of Ivy’s specific sort of madness, prone to mania and anger, with trouble seeing past herself at all, and it costs her a betrayal and may well cost her a Janet-from-HR.

209) New Gods by Kirby/Royer/Colletta/Bruce Berry/Heck/Theakston A little messy, but Orion and Lightray’s yaoi power and the timelessness of The Hunger Dogs’ depiction of sinister warfare upon one’s own people as they rise against make this some of Kirby’s most essential storytelling. Comics rule!

208) Eight Billion Genies by Soule/Browne/Knipstein/Crank/Schnatz Incredible comic, had reservations early on that were blown away by the sheer beauty and empathy at the core of the work. You can believe most of the world is dangerously foolish, but love prevails. Anyway, a good lark.
