I was third generation grammar school, it served me well and I enjoyed it (co-ed) My husband 2nd gen single sex grammar, he did not enjoy it although it served him ok. We don’t live in a grammar area, nearest one is an hour away. So our child is at the local comp (top sets)

I was at a little middle school with the catchment including one of the most disadvantaged wards in Bucks. Just did a few of those verbal reasoning books from WHSmiths. Husband the same, but in Poole. Before the prep school was necessary.

Twas ever thus….. When my parents went (mid 60s) it was on merit, when I went (late 80s) elements of tutoring were there. About 15 years ago or so, the Bucks entrance tests were changed to be tutor proof because the GS heads were pissed off with tutored kids who couldn’t cope with it.

Went to the dentist today for a temp crown until the proper one is fitted in a few weeks. Lots of drilling but no need for anaesthetic. Not near nerves. Would gladly sit for another 7 hour tattoo. At least there is something pretty to show for it.

There appears to be a bit of backlash about this, on some of the socials. Usual arguments, why, it’s a nothing illness, blah blah. And the usual ‘I was ok, my kids were ok…’ No appreciation of (future) complications. I’m pleased, although now not needed. I’d absolutely welcome an EBV vaccine!

Someone I’ve known for 25 years died by suicide on 29/12. His 49th birthday was 31/12. Planned meticulously. No one had any idea. Was always the life and soul, successful at work, loving family. Check in on your mates, even those who seem ok. They may not be.
