Nature-based Solutions (NbS) have gained attention as a promising way to complement traditional water infrastructures in the Andean region. However, they not yet widely implemented due to institutional, technical, financial, and socio-cultural barriers. Yarima Recalde’s thesis investigates these limitations and develops practical tools to strengthen the integration of NbS into water management in urban and peri-urban areas of the Andes.

Through a systematic literature review and a mixed-methods study involving experts and local actors (e.g. surveys, semi-structured interviews, comparative analysis), the researcher identified 𝟮𝟲 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝟯𝟲 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟭𝟵 𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀 that shape their implementation. The thesis addresses the need to consider the heterogeneity of urban wastewater treatment reactors in process modelling. Full-scale reactors exhibit complex circulation patterns, oxygen gradients and zones with different biological activity. 💧 💧 💧

Carla Vázquez has applied detailed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) together with Activated Sludge Models (ASM) 💻 💻

Overall, the thesis demonstrates how full-scale CFD–ASM2d modelling can improve wastewater treatment process understanding, highlight mixing and transfer limitations, and support more energy-efficient operational decisions. The work focuses on La Almunia wastewater treatment plant in Zaragoza.

Directed by Drs Gaetan blandin, Hèctor Monclús and Ignasi Rodriguez-Roda Layret of LEQUIA research group, this doctoral thesis addresses an environmental challenge posed by the steady rise of desalination worldwide: the circular management of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes 🌎 💦

The researcher studied main constraints during the operation of RO membranes (drying, industrial use, chemical exposure) to better understand their impact on membrane performance and evaluate whether these factors pose limitations for membrane recycling .This approach was also extended to forward osmosis (FO) membranes. Then, alternative oxidative chemical treatment with ozone for membrane recycling and transformation was evaluated and pilot-scale tests to validate the reuse potential of transformed membranes were performed. ♻️ ♻️

Tot plegat, amb l’objectiu de continuar implantant solucions d’economia circular al sector ramader i reduir la dependència dels recursos fòssils per obtenir fertilitzants.

Alba Cabrera studied a degree in Environmental Sciences, and a Master’s in Water Science and Technology at the University of Girona. In 2016 she completed a doctoral thesis on the removal of siloxanes from biogas through adsorption processes, a topic on which she has published numerous articles and given presentations at international conferences. After her doctorate, the researcher was awarded with several prestigious post-doctoral grants (Juan de la Cierva, MSCA-Cofund TecnioSpring) and developed part of her activity abroad; specifically, in the United States and Italy.

Currently, Dr. Cabrera is researching the application of adsorption and oxidation processes to the treatment of both liquid and gaseous effluents. Thus, she works on projects within the energy (biogas) and water (potable water treatment and regeneration of purified water) fields. She works in multidisciplinary research teams that apply chemical engineering, analytical chemistry and mathematical modeling. The researcher also stands out for her transfer activity, developed within the framework of several contracts with companies and entities in the water sector.
