Firefox 158 released with JPEG XL support
Firefox 158 is now available to download, providing out-of-the-box support for JPEG XL images. JPEG XL is said to have better compression than other image formats, including WebP, PNG and regular ol’ JPEG. It supports wider colour gamut, HDR and high bit-depth, as well as animation, alpha channels and lossless and progressive encoding. Mozilla has spent several months testing JPEG XL support in Firefox, providing an opt-in toggle to try it out via the browser’s Labs page. Other changes and fixes Firefox’s Smart Window, the AI-powered browsing mode that uses a cloud-based provider like OpenAI and Alibaba to help you […] You're reading Firefox 158 released with JPEG XL support, a blog post from OMG! @marcoarment For your transcription devices, consider creating a system extension for your transcription app. That one can start running before the login and OOBE screens, so even if a machine is stuck on glass translucency setup screen, your transcription daemon will be up and running.

Apple writing example code in Objective C, in 2026. They are REALLY desperate for developers to support this device.

Apple has drastically scaled scroll pockets in iOS 27, but now the container view for a tab view is much shorter, creating a jarring cut off background glass whenever the prominent tab is stretched even slightly. Attention to detail in California.

Clicking Cmd+T, what used to be the shortcut to toggle slow animations, now creates a new tab, but the fruity clowns forgot their window is still in the minimized state.

Since it's most likely a vibe coded SwiftUI abomination, Apple engineering has neglected to pay attention to details, like the minimized window still allowing show of the standard AppKit tab bar, thus destroying the title bar.

Xcode 27's "Device Hub" is a broken shitshow, but most importantly, it lacks the Debug menu, where you could toggle slow animations and simulate memory warnings. Apple works tirelessly to destroy any good tool they used to have.

@stroughtonsmith Unlike Touch Bar on Mac and touch events in UIKit, gesture recognizers are the only mechanism for receiving direct Sidecar touches. AppKit doesn’t deliver Sidecar touch events through the responder chain or through event monitors. 💀

@siracusa The issue with SteamOS is that it is incompatible with anticheat malware that modern games require, which these days look indistinguishable from rootkits (priority kernel drivers). For example, none of EA’s games function on SteamOS.

@siracusa Why not use ImageMagick with a bash script and add that to the context menu? I couldn’t imagine not tearing the little hair I have left, trying to create these dumb automations with the Catalyst UI in Shortcuts.

So to enable and disable the effect, in my case, I need to track which header is pinned to the top, and call _setActive: on the interactions of the header views to only enable for the top one. I extended UICollectionViewLayoutAttributes with a fields for this. And it works.

If you create an _UIScrollPocketContainerInteraction instance and add it to the view, it actually works. But it creates an amusing effect where all glass effects are synchronized.

Léo Natan :batman: @leonatan.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy · 13/10/2025
Turns out there is a host of new, private, "interactions", one of which is _UIScrollPocketContainerInteraction, which manages the view's trait environment so that is adjusts child visual effects (using another "interaction"). What if you wanted the same behavior in your code?

View hierarchy inspector doesn't reveal much. The two hierarchies are the same, but notice the header view is positioned under the scroll pocket in the custom layout "for some reason".

An Apple UICollectionViewLayout subclass vs a custom one. Notice the header visual effect view's glass is "synchronized" with the navigation bar, making them switch appearance together. No way there is a UIGlassContainerEffect in there somewhere.

Turns out, there are UITabBar._isMinimized, UITabBar._setMinimized: and UITabBar._setMinimizedStateDidChangeHandler:, which provide this valuable information. But if you call one of these methods, your app will crash. Notice the check for _isPhotosApp, or else raise an exception.

Photos on iOS 26 does not use the public bottomAccessory/UITabAccessory API, yet is able to detect when the tab bar minimizes and make that bar fade in and out. Inspecting the hierarchy shows it's just a UIView subclass. So how does it know when the tab bar minimizes?

@replacicon Hello, Any chance of adding support for embedded app bundles inside other app bundles? For example, the Simulator app resides inside Xcode's app bundle. An option to specify an app's path manually would do the trick just fine. Thanks for the great app!
