I'm sure there'll be many takes on this announcement from UKRI www.ukri.org/news/ukri-mo... , but my main continuous worry is that "demand management" (i.e. internal selection) is very unequal, with terrible EDI implications.
screenshot text:

- more actively using demand management for selected funding applications where volumes are expected to be high, by working in partnership with research organisations
- focusing funding for strategic government and societal priorities (priority bucket 2) on larger and longer-term investments to reduce the burden on applicants while supporting strategic outcomes
- empowering UKRI Programme Directors and Opportunity Leads to use assessment approaches that best reflect the aims, desired outcomes and scale of individual funding opportunities
- using in-person verification, such as interviews, for higher-risk awards where additional assurances are required
- increasing the use of Distributed Peer Review (DPR) for suitable high-volume opportunities across UKRI, building on promising trials of DPR by research councils such as ESRC and BBSRC
- testing an initial triage of applications by UKRI staff, including staff-led desk rejection, supported by the UK Metascience Unit
- trialling a weighted multi-criteria assessment approach to better balance considerations of excellence with the strategic aims of each funding opportunity
- exploring the safe use of AI-assisted assessment, supported by appropriate controls and safeguards, starting with a retrospective trial with the UK Metascience Unit to compare what AI would have concluded from past applications against the decisions that were made

They're the same picture (from www.timeshighereducation.com/depth/academ...)
The language of openness, collaboration, integrity, mentoring and responsible assessment is now widespread. However, the limits for such high-level initiatives are becoming equally visible. The fact is that responsible assessment has entered institutional vocabulary much faster than it has entered institutional practice, and many organisations can point to formal commitments on their websites to improve their research assessment while leaving everyday incentives largely intact.

A department can praise narrative CVs while still ranking candidates by journal lists. A funder can promote responsible assessment while still rewarding predictable productivity. A publisher can speak the language of integrity while still profiting from volume. In each case, the vocabulary changes while the operating logic remains intact.

To see the world we live in, this classifies me as slightly left-wing economically! findmypolitics.com?e=-16&so=-69...
Result describing me as a Liberal Progressive, with five numbers, saying that I'm 16% left-wing economically, 69% libertarian socially, 66% pro-liberties, 53% globalist, and 22% low trust in the system.

I like that I'm at the same distance from Biomedical Engineering Researchers and from Italian LGBTQ+ Community.
black background with many small green dots (each dot is a bluesky account), with a pink circle representing @leomrtns . around this pink circle there are clusters with higher density of green dots, labelled Italian LGBTQ+ community, biomedical research engineers, Genomics and Bioinformatics researchers, psychiatric and statistical geneticists, infections disease modelling researchers, Canadian footbal league fans, UK PR and communications professionals, cardiology medical professionals, cybersecurity professionals. The closest cluster reads Microbiology Research Community.

Open letter from Ian Chapman to research and innovation community www.ukri.org/news/open-le... TL;DR: UKRI’s overall budget is rising, but not for you. If I understood correctly the rising energy costs (AI?) and "type of facilities and services" are to blame.
article snapshot that reads:

The situation at STFC is unique among the UKRI councils because its cost base has increased significantly due to the type of facilities and services it manages, the research it funds and some projects with higher costs than foreseen.

Over the previous SR period, rising energy costs and unfavourable movements in foreign exchange rates increased STFC’s annual costs by over £50 million a year. These unforeseen costs and an ambitious programme from the previous SR have increased the pressure on STFC’s budget. Despite a record UKRI settlement for 2026 and 2030 and STFC’s core budget holding relatively flat from £835 million to £842 million over this period, a reset is needed as currently STFC’s costs will outpace the funding available and would eat into other parts of the UKRI budget.

Completely unrelated, obvs, to this article claiming that more formal grievances being submitted by students and staff are evidence that the poor senior professors are being targeted, since the grievances are ultimately dismissed. www.timeshighereducation.com/depth/why-ar...
article snapshot reading

“Bullying now refers to anything that is mildly unpleasant for an individual – it has become an all-pervasive threat that people see at every turn,” Furedi said. “The idea of bullying encourages students and staff to see themselves as vulnerable, almost like children – it infantilises us and goes against the critical spirit of the academic vocation, which is challenging ideas and asking people to explain themselves,” he said.article snapshot, where the "he" refers to a senior scientist who was subject to a grievance complaint that was completely thrown out. The text reads

“Some of the grievances I’ve seen are massively disingenuous. They’ve been made by [junior] researchers who have been told their work isn’t up to scratch or whose contract won’t be renewed. They have nothing to lose because there is no real censure if you make a trivial complaint, despite what the procedures claim,” he said.

“There are…clear timelines for these investigations to be completed, but these aren’t adhered to and there is no reason for HR to expedite matters. While suspensions and investigations run, an academic’s career usually goes into freefall and it’s very hard to recover even if none of the complaint is upheld,” he added.article snapshot about the same senior scientist and which reads

But the senior scientist believes that matters need to be taken out of HR’s hands entirely. In his view, “a truly independent body staffed by employment lawyers employed on a retainer would be both fairer and cheaper...These lawyers could represent several universities…and could take decisions quickly about whether these grievances have any merit,” he said.

“We need a system that isn’t driven by HR. The current system is entirely flawed and it is destroying people’s careers. People are forced to wait months before cases are thrown out as baseless – it takes a huge toll on your mental well-being, and it’s expensive for all parties.”

Deat @bsky.app is that you? In the UK you don't seem so worried about the privacy implications or the scope breadth
