While on display at The Met in 2008, the lunette fell from its mount and shattered into hundreds of pieces. Examining the fragments closely to reassemble them, conservators discovered a clever five-hundred-vear- old repair. Part of the torso had broken away during the first firing; to save the work, the fragment was reattached with glaze and fired again. The melted glaze secured the fragment, revealing the Della Robbia workshop's ingenuity and artistic problem-solving.
