When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

This is infuriating. Europeans have looked Ukrainians in the eye. We have taken them into our homes and communities while Americans get to decide if they live or die.

I know everyone is hurting with prices sky high. But spare a thought for Ukraine who just saw their enemy get a huge paycheck from their supposed ally and their defensive capacities kneecapped by the richest man in the world. They deserve so much better.

I left X and it is much harder to connect with on-the-ground journalist and sources for news in Venezuela. Some are on here but not active. It's very US centric here. Even when you post about somewhere else, an American will jump in with - it's just like that in Maine or whatever. It's not.

Every AI/HCI paper I review now just sounds like this.
Research [25] shows that people [26] enjoy the feeling of winning games [3,5,19]. Enjoying things can lead to longer life expectancy [2], higher economic productivity [9,22,33-40,302] and improve mental health [9]. Yet many games still include losing players [67,4]. A recent study showed that less than half of the players in a Chess [1] match win on average [42]. We have developed an LLM-driven co-creative [66], user-led [11], mixed-initiative [80] assistant for Chess [2], through which players can redefine the rules of Chess [3] using generative AI prompting such that they are the winner of Chess [4]. A study (n=3) showed that 100\% of people felt better, healthier and more self-actualised after using our tool, showing that this may be the way forward for games and human culture more broadly in the future.

This isn't a Cornell problem, or an Ivy League problem. It's not even a rich kids problem. It's a societal problem. Women are abused everywhere since they are girls and men/boys get away with it. Even all the way to the White House. We need a good hard look at ourselves.

People using LLMs to write proposals are probably not the ones you should be funding. And we really need laws guarding against feeding unpublished ideas into these models. Plagiarism central.

The AI bot review process described by an applicant to a @ukri.org funded call is so depressing. How about weeding out Ai produced applications? If they are flooding the calls, treat them like the problem. Use the bots to identify and reject. It's not rocket science.

Had a UKRI funded grant proposal rejected at the "AI triage stage". "This AI-based triage was used only to identify approximately 50% of the strongest proposals to take forward to full human review." 🧪 #academicsky
I am writing to let you know that, unfortunately, your application was not successful.

Review process

As part of the initial triage of the 179 proposals submitted to this call, each was assessed using an AI-based review. Every proposal was read independently by several different AI models against the same seven criteria used to shape this call (including cyber security relevance, research quality and novelty, importance of the problem addressed, feasibility of the project plan, likely outputs and impact, value for money, and responsible research practice), with each model asked to give a score and a written justification with supporting quotations from the text. To guard against any one model's idiosyncrasies, we also ran a second, independent process in which different AI models debated the merits and weaknesses of each proposal before reaching a judgement, again against the same criteria. Scores from both processes were combined to produce an overall ranking.

This AI-based triage was used only to identify approximately 50% of the strongest proposals to take forward to full human review. Projects selected for funding were drawn from those that progressed to the full human review stage. We recognise that AI-assisted assessment is a new and evolving part of the review process, and we are continuing to evaluate how well it aligns with the judgements of human reviewers on this call. We will soon produce a document detailing our method, so that others can build upon it and improve it.

Feedback on your application

Your application was not selected to progress beyond the AI triage stage. To provide transparency on the outcome of this assessment, we are sharing below the scores (out of 5) from each of the two AI review processes described above, together with the mean score across the two processes.
