This has raised many questions for me... Was there always a bucket of wee handy? Or would the whole family have had to do an emergency wee in a bucket to provide the appropriate quantity at short notice?

My main thought is I wish I had 'By chance the Cycladic people' on a decal on the wall. My second thought is I need to actually read 'The Wrong Norma' and take it back to the library.

Holding out in North Yorkshire. Let's see how far through October I can make it (pros Flat quite heat retentive, gets afternoon sun, Cons prone to chilblains, and the current strictures of managing my stupid body means I am not as clothed as as seemly (tmi))

Yes. In my extended research love affair with the Daily Herald Picture Archive Battle of Cable St. was notable by its absence. There were lots of other DH photographer and agency photographs of 1930s anti Mosely protest marches as well as anti Jewish events, so it's not that issue wasn't covered.

I was going to suggest that, but only stayed 1 night, and thought I may have been fooled by the Beatles connection, and the flayingly bitey wind. Also I didn't fall in love with like the others.

i'm sticking with my 'Glasgow is the Scottish Liverpool' developed c.2001, about the time I also discovered 'Marseille is the French Liverpool' but about 10 years before the revelatory Naples is the Italian Liverpool'. All fabulous.

agree with you about teenage taste. Gobbled then up at 11/12/13 ish, along with Dick Francis. The post Christie years... He committed the unforgivable sin of ripping off a perfect Somerset Maugham short story. The Luncheon. Just off to reread - hope its as good as I remember...

Yes. Gen X here as I moved through various jobs / possible pension schemes in my (public service) career it was noticeable that the terms kept changing for the worse, and the defensive union action was always to protect the better contracts and pension arrangements of earlier cohort.

I have no religion but Thomas Tallis's spem in allium, and some Duccio Madonnas make me weep. Intense beauty. Am I a faith voyeur?? I know quite a lot of Christian stories... Art is a good teacher.

It's utterly magnificent. I've watched it 3 times now, & cried in the same places every time. Funny, quirky, moving And I'm celebrating the arrival of Paris Police 1910 on iplayer by revelling in delightful anticipation by rewatching 1900 and 1905. Has anyone smoked more beautifully than Marc Barbe?

I'm *around* your age. Mum and stepdad's early relationship soundtracked by Phil Collins (bad) and Stevie Winwood (fond of that album). 40 years married in November - 11/11 at 11:00 which is my personal proof that the minute's silence has massively increased in observance

I've been suspicious of it throughout, but might be my age (55). Much detoxification felt like a thin veneer. Inclusion in flags/terminology (English/British) is now slicing and dicing to cut out 'them' - whoever 'them' is decided to be at any moment by the self appointed 'us'. Retrograde bullshit

I enjoyed the diversion. Also start thinking about my friend who has a very very very narrow palette and is bored by food. I'll keep an eye on her just in case.

The arguments appear to now completely ignore the original intention (a person's choice to end suffering). I wonder if all those advocates of better hospices/ palliative care will now agitate to make that happen.

Not sure I agree. With a few honourable exceptions (I enjoyed Harkaway because I love Smiley, rather than the family connection) much of it feels redundant - a Marvelization of writing. Endless IP utilisation bores me.

It reads like he's genuinely thinking about the answer, rather than starting from a point of defensive suspicion. So even if the answer is similar, the tone/vibe is poles apart.

I picked up a beautiful rock from the sea on a walk between Scarborough and Whitby c. 1992. It looked like a delicious peach! When I got home I vanished it. It's remained on display ever since, but at some point people started asking me 'why have you got an old baked potato on your shelf?'

Question - is this similar to DWP turning down PIP? A bet that the claimant won't have the tenacity/resources (energy/support) to see the process through? Costs when appeals favour claimant (as they usually do with PIP), but if they drop out...

ha! I used to get a similar thrill on a stores tour when people were allowed to hold a daguerreotype (comparatively minute time span I know, but the thrill of holding a unique singular image of someone from c 170 years ago was real) and you also have to manoeuvre it till they appear.
