Lenka Dražanová @lenkadrazanova.bsky.social · 25/05/2026Implication: external threat can transform the EU from a perceived cultural threat into a necessary geopolitical shelter even for those who most fiercely resisted it. The converts, not the choir, drove the rally. 030
Lenka Dražanová @lenkadrazanova.bsky.social · 25/05/2026We find no equivalent heterogeneity for national pride. This isn't a generalised retreat into collective identity under threat. It's specifically about the EU as shelter. 120
Lenka Dražanová @lenkadrazanova.bsky.social · 25/05/2026It's not just symbolic. The same group shifts toward supporting a common European army. The defenders of national sovereignty moved furthest toward defense integration under threat! The effect is largest in CEE where the threat is most proximate and memories of Soviet domination run deepest. 110
Lenka Dražanová @lenkadrazanova.bsky.social · 25/05/2026We analyze survey data from 16 EU countries collected 5 weeks after the invasion. Using a causal forest algorithm, we find that exclusive nationalists (those who identify solely with their nation, not Europe) show the strongest association between threat perception and European pride. 110

Lenka Dražanová @lenkadrazanova.bsky.social · 16/04/2026One finding I find interesting: the predictors differ across attitude dimensions. Economic variables (income, occupation, urban context, minority background) weakly predict attitudes toward immigrants' contribution but not support for open immigration policies. Only education and age do that. 100

Lenka Dražanová @lenkadrazanova.bsky.social · 17/03/2026What stands out is the size of the 'middle' category. In several countries, a substantial share of respondents score exactly 5 — they haven't firmly landed on either side. Those people, sometimes referred to as the "moveable middle", might not be as moveable as we'd like to think. More on that soon! 000
Lenka Dražanová @lenkadrazanova.bsky.social · 17/03/2026There does not seem to be a simple East-West divide anymore — sure, in Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, large majorities hold positive views and in Slovakia and Hungary, the pattern is nearly reversed. But for example, Poland is closer to the more positive side, and Germany is in the middle. 100
Lenka Dražanová @lenkadrazanova.bsky.social · 17/03/2026Is there still an East-West divide in immigration attitudes in Europe?
