Thx to Mr. Edy Bercerra & anthropologist Florencio Delgado (USFQ), my HIST 110 students saw ruins of Manuel Cobos’ Hacienda El Progreso on San Cristobal—vast former highland sugar cane plantation that many coastal-bound ecotourists miss. Ideas for agrotourism might anchor interpretation here.

With my students in San Cristobal highlands, amid the feral landscapes in agricultural Zones of Special Use. I wish more visitors came up here. Fascinating guava story: the world-famous finches seem to use oils from nonnative guava on their feathers to repel insects.

Teaching on the USC Galapagos program … Darwin’s legacy looms, the Floreana saga inspires films, but the ‘first colonizers’ do help to run this ‘natural laboratory.’ I didn’t expect to be so enchanted by seal lions. When they lie in the road and divert traffic, I’m happier.

Excited to be part of this collection of essays, just arrived today. We have lovely shorelines, historic sites, and golf courses that attract tourists to SC, but the forest & the lumber industry shaped the state’s economy for most of the 20th C. Thanks Jessica and Mark for keen editing!
