My dad's copy of this (which I still have). There are photos of Bryn Celli Ddu and I spent hours trying to figure out how the chamber 'entrance' worked. Ended up starting my archaeological career there, and writing a PhD thesis about it...

Thanks! I had no idea. Information about anything at Tara was frustratingly hard to come by.

Research suggests fallen stone was deliberately altered in order to give it a phallic appearance

While I agree completely with the sentiment, and while I'm quite sure there are many thoughtful people producing excellent material, let's not pretend that shoddy crap is only a product of AI use. I still sometimes wake up in a sweat remembering my mid-1990's experience 1/2

That could have been done at any time though? If it was a standing stone in 3400 BC it could have been taken down, dressed, and moved in 2500?

I would dearly love the Altar Stone to predate most other things at Stonehenge - this would suit me very well. But in the absence of any direct evidence for any date at all, I think it's best not to implicate it in any grand notions of the place's meaning.

"Archaeologists believe the altar stone may have been installed around 2500BC" [or at any other time that suits their hypothesis]

It may be that - in cases of major infrastructure like this - the archaeological contractor isn't allowed to comment, either before or after the fact of misrepresentation in the press.

At my first @tag45.bsky.social in over 20 years seems like a good time to ask my periodic question. If you had to recommend one book about archaeology published this century, what would it be? (Yes, it can be your own book).
