#JNeurosci: Using fMRI, Zhang et al. found that while both sounds & videos reactivate sensory brain regions during recall, auditory memories rely more on internally constructed, gist-like representations that differ from the original perceptual patterns doi.org/10.1523/JNEUROSCI.1576-25.2…

Information from multiple sensory modalities including visual scenes, sounds, touch, and smells combines to form our vivid memories. Unfortunately, the field has largely focused on vision. We found that auditory memory and visual memory differ in fundamental ways.

Different reliance on sensory reinstatement and internally transformed representations during vivid retrieval of visual and auditory episodes
Episodic memory retrieval engages both sensory reinstatement and internally transformed representations. Due to modality-specific processing, auditory and visual memories may differ in their reliance ...

Music has never been just a sequence of cold notes. When we listen to a melody, the musician behind it subtly appears in our mind, guiding us as we sway and sing along. And seeing a performance live makes that connection with the musician tangible. academic.oup.com/scan/article...

Visual congruency of performers’ movements enhances vocal music reward through Mu entrainment
Abstract. There is emerging evidence that a performer’s body movements may enhance music-induced pleasure. However, the neural mechanism underlying such mo

Another new study published. We found that multisensory evoked potentials can accurately classify older adults with mild cognitive impairment. More importantly, the pipeline we designed proved highly effective in revealing which components contributed to the classification. doi.org/10.1007/s113...

Neural features underlying high-accuracy classification of amnestic mild cognitive impairment using multi-sensory-evoked potentials - GeroScience
Early detection of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is crucial for timely interventions. This study combines scalp recordings of lateralized auditory, visual, and somatosensory stimuli with a...

My new study is now online. To clarify how cognitive reserve protects the aging brain during cognitive tasks, we tested two competing hypotheses. Examining older adults with musical training, a “natural model” of enhanced reserve, we found clear support for the "Hold‑back upregulation hypothesis".

Long-term musical training can protect against age-related upregulation of neural activity in speech-in-noise perception
Long-term musical training can provide additional neural resources to help cope with the effect of aging. This study describes the neural mechanisms behind this observation, showing that cognitive res...
