Rainy allotment days are a lot less wet than they used to be with my lovely new polytunnel. I did do plenty of outdoor work in the rain, obviously, then a sit down and a cup of tea in here. Scored some fresh eggs in exchange for some vegetables. Happy days. #allotment #growyourown

If you take the photo from the right angle it doesn’t look too much like a drought #allotment #growyourown

I’ve constructed a polytunnel with an almost volunteer assistant. It has drawn compliments from the allotment elders “a very professional job”, possibly the only nice thing they’ve said to me! Just the doors to go on and tidying up the excess polythene #growyourown #allotment

Feels like spring, I know it’s not, it’s just false spring, but if anyone wants me I’m lying on the grass at the allotment watching bees. #allotment

2 feet of cables, it’s been a pretty intense January for knitting. I’ve never done cables before, l don’t think it’s bad for ambition exceeding talent. I have a few months of plainer knitting before I get back to the matching panel. #knitting

Got spuds. I place the order in December with a glass of wine, choosing from a list of over 95 varieties, it’s always a relief to discover I’ve ordered a manageable amount when I go and collect. This is not the case every year. #allotment

It’s my 6 year allotmentversary. On this day I sent Andrew this photo (he was in A&E after a motorbike accident) and told him this was totally fine! It’s not as lush today as usual, the drought has been hard, but it’s better, and I did it all myself (he died the following January). #allotment #widow

It took me 2.5 hours to sort out the chaos of 40 tomato plants in my tiny yard this morning. It turns out they do quite well if you abandon them for 2 weeks with auto irrigation. Rewarded with the first ripe Artisan Golden Bumblebee. #tomato

Home from a lovely European adventure mostly by train to the Hungarian Grand Prix via Paris and Vienna. Now I can settle down and watch the race. It’s fair to say you go to F1 to see it, feel it and smell the burning rubber, but the race can be hard to follow. #F1

Colleague "you eat a lot of salad". Wait until she sees how much courgette I find myself eating #allotment #growyourown
Bright green lettuce in a big patch, with remarkably neatly spaced Swiss Chard in the background. There are orange and yellow French Marigolds growing between them all4 Courgette plants loving life, bright yellow flowers and baby courgettes appearing. The white courgette plants have white patterns on the dark green leaves, the dark green courgette plants have brighter green leaves. I'm going to be eating a lot of courgettes.

First allotment (school night) beer of the year, while I contemplate the consequences of none of my courgette plants getting eaten by slugs for the first time ever and now having approximately 6 times as many as a person needs. #allotment

In hindsight planting out 100 baby veg after work was ambitious but I did it, and the wildflower planting in the park looked glorious in the evening light when I came home. The allotment is now pretty full, let’s hope the slugs leave some plants alone this year!

The calm before the storm. I’ve pitched my tent, it hasn’t yet rained, I’ve brought myself to the pub where there is indoors, a chair to sit in and cold wine, I won’t get another opportunity until Monday. #motogp

Thank you, it’s definitely a labour of love. I am very lucky to have as many bees as I do, I grow a lot of things to feed them and I think there are hives at our site. This was day 1, 5 years ago, I’ve done it by myself, stubbornly!

Allotment isn’t looking too bad today. I often wonder if I come across people I talk to online in real life. If you were at an allotment this morning and heard a middle aged woman swearing and ranting at an ungrateful bee that stung her, that’d be me #allotment

New baby pest controllers! And some of my healthy bindweed forest. The compost bin is full of adult Slow worms, I found 14 adults and babies on my plot today without really looking. I’m very lucky to have them. #allotment
Tiny baby slow worms amongst white bindweed roots and stems. The slow worms are golden and shining in the sunlight. They’re about the same size as earthworms.

Ah the pre-election period, I can’t comment on politics so here is my cat thinking she’d tough out the rain then deciding to run for cover. Obviously the rain is entirely my fault in her eyes. If it could just be enough to mean I don’t have to go to the allotment at 6am I’ll be happy

The #Camino Primitivo was incredible. Completed with my amazing 76 year old dad whose slow and steady approach outlasted several younger, fitter pilgrims. I always miss the Camino when I return home but it’s really nice not sharing a bedroom and often shower with strangers! #ultreia #peregrina

Fools Spring was conveniently at a weekend so the allotment got a lot of love. The frogs have left but the spawn is developing nicely.
View of an allotment. Some freshly dug soil, grass paths that are ready to be mown.A close up of Frog spawn with black tadpole shapes starting to form inside and bright green duckweed on the pond surface

I’ve attempted Ramazan pidesi, a bit of an effort considering some of it is about to be İskender kebab, but it’s delicious.

The sky was beautiful for my walk today, the ground not so much. Cheltenham Circular Footpath abandoned for the weekend after a few miles of this. The going was definitely heavy.
Bright blue spring sky with wispy white clouds and aircraft vapour trails, with the Cotswold hills in the background. The ground is very boggy with deep mud and muddy puddles.

I've opened a Rioja, even though it's Monday. It's 5 years since Andrew's funeral and the 5 year anniversaries have been quiet. Very few calls or messages this year. I want to talk about him and remember him with everyone but when that's concentrated on these memorable days it's hard. #widow #grief

11 miles of Cotswold Way, not a bad way to spend a few hours. This gatekeeper did make me squeeze between his bum and the wall though .
Bay pony with a white blaze and a blue rug, with his head over a metal gate that I needed to pass through. His bum was quite close to a stone wall. It’s a grey day and the ground is a bit muddy.

I’ve spent £511 on my allotment this year, and I’m £6 short of breaking even (I give my produce a value equivalent to buying them, on a spreadsheet i meticulously maintain, obviously). It was an expensive year and a bad growing year but worth every penny. #allotment #growyourown

Just finished the body of my jumper, starting the ribbing and discovered I am somehow 60 stitches short ( you can’t type numbers is desperate upper case), I cut myself badly on the first day I’ve been able to allotment for 3 weeks. But at least my tasteful tree is up. I will now get drunk. #widow

“It’s been one of those weeks” as a Friday evening shopping list.
