Also, if El-Sayed loses by the margin of gettable black voters, can leftists finally drop their class-over-everything theory of electoral politics once and for all?

67 percent support among black voters by a Democratic candidate in possibly the strongest year for Dems this century is unacceptable. We’ll deeply regret squeezing McMorrow out of this race if El-Sayed loses.

I agree that “the vibe is bad” would not be a good argument here. But I’m pointing out a specific, plausible mechanism by which good people get disenfranchised under your system. That’s what I want you to explain.

That’s not at all what I’m arguing. What I want to know is how you’re going to make a test that only disenfranchises the evil people. Last time you complained about people not being knowledgeable enough to vote, which made me think this was some sort of factual test you wanted to administer.

The only other thing I can think of is the racially diverse cast. Although if he’s objecting to that, this is basically just Fox News critique done as theater.

Also, where exactly does this guy find didacticism in Hamilton? One line says “immigrants get the job done,” one character mentions supporting abolition, but otherwise we get a pretty straightforward telling of Hamilton’s life.
“We have many things that we disagree on, but the thing that we were always very united on is this feeling that we were tired of didactic theater,” Sinensky says. “A lot of the work that’s been made commercially in the last decade has been very direct about what you’re supposed to take away from it, and we wanted to write something that was a reaction to that – that was about that.”

So while the current sociopolitical moment (post-#MeToo, post-Covid, post-“Woke 1.0”) is certainly a target in the musical’s line of fire, its form lampoons the art that has resulted from that zeitgeist. Hamilton is a major inspiration – if that’s the word – with Slam Frank’s logo riffing on the blockbuster bio-musical’s own, and its musical sensibility imitates its verbose, sloganeering rap.

“Audiences keep getting offended at my show making light of the Holocaust. Some people just can’t take a joke, I guess.”
“I know that there are people who do get offended,” says Bernábe. “There have been a couple of times where people have walked out; I don’t know if they forget that it’s satire, or it could be that everyone has a different threshold for it. We are teasing, but not actually making fun of the identity. What the show plays with is the idea of your identity equaling your ethics, because that’s just not true.”

The creator tells you everything you need to know about him right here. The people he talks to know the time has come to stop taking the Holocaust seriously. I’m sensing chronic X brain at work here.
“There are many things in the culture reflective of things that Slam Frank is doing, so it’s clearly something in the air,” he says. “There’s certainly questions about the manipulation of the sanctity of the Holocaust in the popular imagination. I’ve gotten some emails that are like, ‘People don’t take this topic seriously anymore because of you,’ and I’m like, ‘I’ve been talking to people for the last three years; they were ready to not take it seriously anymore.’”

Given that likely effect, would you contend that black Americans in large numbers are “not helped by being able to vote”?
001
Paul Slimin' @legendsofthepaul.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
No doubt governments will feel compelled to require schools teach civics to students if one must pass a civics test to vote, but I don’t think this will help the racial disparity this creates given that majority-black schools provide a worse education in the subjects already mandated.

Paul Slimin' @legendsofthepaul.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
We’ve certainly had periods of our history where neither party cared about the group of people who can’t vote. Relying on the people with political power to protect those without it is how we got Plessy v. Ferguson.
100
Paul Slimin' @legendsofthepaul.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I agree that describes our current reality, but that doesn’t mean it can’t get worse. What types of candidates start winning Democratic primaries, I wonder, when people from underserved communities can’t vote?
100
Paul Slimin' @legendsofthepaul.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
And with the ability to trample this group cemented, the state can start to deprive them of other things as well. This underclass will be at the mercy of the educated/voting class. It doesn’t much look like democracy to me.
120
Paul Slimin' @legendsofthepaul.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
If a given population tends to consistently fail to get registration and thus vote, the government can ignore their needs without much fear of pushback. This means it can deprive them of an education and other resources that only entrench their disenfranchisement.
120
Paul Slimin' @legendsofthepaul.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I certainly like those things, but I don’t feel sure they can neatly contain every power. Even if we imagine a nonpartisan test that measures, I’m guessing, knowledge of history, civics, current events, etc. to obtain voter registration, and each individual can appeal, problems still arise.
210
Paul Slimin' @legendsofthepaul.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
How about a justification based on the fear that a state that decides who gets to vote will likely leave behind its status as a democracy and become something else?

Yup. My concern is that AI will do to intellectual work what industrialization did to clothes: even though we widely recognize the aesthetic superiority of the bespoke, handmade product, market forces mainly crowd it out with inferior, easily manufactured alternatives.

Like if we give generals the last word on legal interpretation, then the joint chiefs of staff just becomes another Supreme Court except with direct command over the most powerful coercive apparatus in the world. With all the complications that entails.
010
Paul Slimin' @legendsofthepaul.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
“Following the law as written” sounds simple, but applying it is very fraught. We have countless examples of judges construing the law as written very opportunistically. Why do we think generals will not do the same?
100
Paul Slimin' @legendsofthepaul.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Sorry, I misspoke here. Courts have attempted this before, but currently SCOTUS understands itself not to have this specific power. But courts do constrain military *action.* For example, blocking Trump’s deployment of the national guard in some places.
010
Paul Slimin' @legendsofthepaul.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I think that unfortunately civilian control of the armed forces operates in a pretty binary way. Either the military follows civilian commands and upholds that control, or they exercise an independent authority and thus puppeteer the state to some extent, a familiar flavor of authoritarianism.

Paul Slimin' @legendsofthepaul.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
When it comes to issues like these, the Constitution only provides the mechanism of elections and checks from other branches to enforce the law. The Supreme Court can enjoin military strikes, Congress can force the end of conflicts, etc.
