I'll offer a small hope, from an old, male, codger-presenting person: As I contemplate your post, it occurs to me that (at least) four of the go-to people in my life, an electrician, a plumber, a bookseller, and a lawyer, are all women, each of whom I trust without question.

My first experience with a new nearby roundabout was almost getting hit by someone who was backing up, having missed his exit.

I believe a large part of it was that white people wanted to hear "Black" music, but Black performers weren't allowed in the venues.

I was reading Bradbury and Asimov in fourth grade, and got hooked on Pratchett in my late 60s.

Every time I plant a seed, I marvel that this is a tiny bundle of instructions on how to interact with the environment: find molecules of water and minerals, and use collected energy to assemble them into a full plant, then duplicate its own packet of programming and drop it on the ground nearby

Yes, "It’s terrifying when you think about this", but not at all for the reasons he thinks. It scares me that there are so many people who feel he represents them.

"Golden Age"? No. Not even a "Gilded Age", as everyone can see that the color is just from cheap spray paint, and they know it. "Guilted Age", maybe.

A friend loaned me a book on how to write a romance novel. The feeling was one of filling in a spreadheet with new names and locations and publishing it.

That NP-APrinciple sounds a bit like a cross between the Anthropic Principle and, "If a tree falls in the forest..."

So now he says, "I am the code!" when referring to ignoring and bypassing safety concerns and building codes, especially too few exit routes, during the Epstein Ballroom construction. This may be a self-solving problem.

As a former grammatical nitpicker, i relaxed considerably when it dawned on me that, as you mention, current usage is a snapshot in the evolution of a language.

Looking at this whole conversation from the outside... I feel like I'm watching a tech and cultural rug-pull like the advent of movies vs. live plays, cars vs. horses, written word vs. memorization... None of these totally eliminated their predecessors, but the shifts were vast and permanent.

I love the term, "asynchronous conversation". I will forevermore think of books in this sense.

I suspect this won't last long. Deprivation of attention and news coverage, not to mention taking his favorite rant targets away, will be intolerable for him very soon.

First time I tried a pawpaw at a farm fair, I bought out their entire stock of seedlings, which was 5 unlabeled trees. They send out runners, so now I have a grove of maybe a hundred additional small trees. Fun fact: my icon here is a pawpaw flower from my first crop.

Many decades ago, I started that book about 8:00 at night, lying on a couch. I read it straight through, looked up, and realized it was midmorning.

Bucky Fuller almost equated the two. He coined the term, "Energy Slaves" to analyze recent mechanized life: a washing machine using cheap electricity was equivalent to a laundry maid, for instance.

And before "Treasure Island", at least a few pirates were musical as well; Stevenson was likely to have seen a stage production of "Pirates of Penzance", unleashed on the world in 1879.

I like Cory Doctorow's approach. He released his first novel under a Creative Commons license, making it free to download, read, and distribute. He said his readership and book sales were much higher than if he had gone the traditional copyright route.
