And that’s the issue to me. Competing claims for what constitutes the group. This is one of the enlightening things about denominations, I suppose. A more refined set of propositions of what makes the group “the group” Anyway, I’m mostly rambling and thinking out loud. I am not trying to convince.

Beliefs are not mere press relations. That’s absurd; if that’s what you’re saying, and maybe it’s not. But action follows beliefs and a group is allowed to determine the parameters of their identity as a group and transgressions of that identity can be said to be a creation of a different group.

In a sense and to a certain extent, you’re right. But not in a totalizing way because humans do any number of bad things and good things and neutral things. Our lives are a collection of moments so they can find a measure of peace if they accept their wrongs as wrong. Just my opinion.
