iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

So now I'm contemplating that initial question in regards to that last 3rd of the game. It tells more of the story, but does the game need that? Only time & further consideration will tell.

000

I've been asking myself this today in regards to my game's narrative. In the past, I've taken entire sections and made them optional. While today I've come to the conclusion that about 2/3rds of my main story is basically a full experience on it's own, narratively speaking.

101

In writing & in game design, always be willing to ask yourself 'If I remove this, what changes?' It acts as a good litmus test to hone in on what matters while weeding out the things that don't. Allowing you to then recontextualize these elements as you see fit.

Happy birthday, have a good rest~ 🥰

010

It all ties together really well in my opinion.

000

For example, Hunts were almost a mini-campaign that ran alongside your main story progression. An item allowed you to see your current rank and information about your current target. The ability to do this activity is also unlocked right after interacting with the reception area for it.

100

I apply it as a hard rule, but it can also be treated like a guideline. This game was also notable to me for not having any traditional quests. All gameplay outside of experiencing the main story was wrapped up in a menu button or accessible from the inventory.

100

A good concept I picked up from Rogue Galaxy on the PS2 is to only have a major system if you can give it a front facing main menu button. That way, there is one centralized place where players can keep track of everything they can do in the game.

Honestly, I kinda realize that this is probably the most "hydrated" I've been in months, which could explain the sudden surge in productivity so... drink water, dehydration is easy to overlook & creeps up on you fast. #art

Illustration of a Lonius, a fantasy creature inspired by sea turtles, floating upright with it's forefins spread to look bigger, but this also makes it look like living shield. Smaller denizens of the deep often flock under it for protection from prowling predators.

I practice making 4-panel comics from time to time. This one tells the story of a Frizaii who got in a little over it's head.

Four panel comic showing a fantasy beast approaching prospective prey. Leaning in close to examine it... but before it can test it's luck, the ersting turns around notices the lion and grows increasingly irate while violently attacking it.

Fan art illustration for the video game Animal Crossing. In a warmly-lit interior, a cartoon character wearing a fancy black vest and bowtie sits on a counter with a cup of coffee. Next to him is a cartoon yellow dog in a yellow blouse with her own cup of coffee. Both look content. In the foreground is a green pigeon character wearing glasses and cleaning a cup with a cloth.

I would also like to add for the inattentive types out there struggling to start tasks. Learn to give in to non-harmful impulses, even if they seem frivolous. Over time, you may develop/boost the same impulses for less interesting tasks. Letting you weaponize those sudden urges for productivity~

This is really good advice. Personally, I've learned to accept that if I don't have something right in front of me-then I won't remember it until much later. Extra tabs/windows just to remember things I wanted to look at. Even keeping things on my table to remind me of tasks I want to do.

A huge tree city at night with a castle at its top. The painting is mostly composed of blue and green hues, with luminescent leaves and sparkly blue water. An airship is heading toward the city nested in the tree.
