What agents probably can do faster than us is to detect, combine and sequence vulnerabilities identified into a more effective or damaging attack. Ethical questions around how they are trained, powered and cooled notwithstanding, there may be opportunities to use them similarly in defence.

I suspect that vulnerabilities exploited by 'AI' in its current form will have been documented in some manner already. I'm not sure agents are finding fundamentally new types of vulnerabilities. Logical code analysis and fuzzing can help identify what remains.

A visitor to the backyard. The chickens are unimpressed but are tolerating it.

Take note: if reapplying a dressing to a cut, don't mistake Dencorub Extra Strength Heat Gel for Solosite. (They have surprisingly similar tube backs. But you soon find out they are very different!)

Happy to see the nav lights of a sailing vessel we've been tracking finally safely inside the heads. The crew have been battling a steering failure as they progressed down the coast, and had been using differential thrust at times. No AIS on the vessel, so Mk 1 Eyeballs were employed.
Port and starboard lateral and masthead lights visible as distressed vessel enters the port at night.

So we've had some connection drops on the redundant Internet connection overnight. The volunteer rescue base sent me these photos this morning... @ubiquiti.bsky.social, love your gear, but the brackets might need some more rust protection, or an option for a stainless mounting.
PowerBeam dish with the mounting bracket rusted into bits.

A normal conversation with my ADHD partner: I walk into the room, so zero context. Partner: "What do you feel about cabbage?" Me: <slightly confused> "I mean, I'm not anti-cabbage" Partner: "Good. So you know, I'm putting your response on a shirt."

Preparing name badges for my partner's stall at the market tomorrow...
My spouse's badge describes her as the Manager. Mine says I am Assistant to the Manager.

I also go by Runner, Moving Trolly Operator and Driver.

"I need time and space to defrag" is my go to... Fortunately I live in a family of 'tisms, and grew up in the era when you had to defrag hard drives, so they got what I meant pretty quickly, but it's still hard to say to loved ones cause you then worry they will think you are pushing them away.

It's so frustrating, it's driving up the cost of other chips and drives as well, as production lines shift to meet demand. We had a server for a volunteer rescue agency increase in magnitude in cost between the quote before a grant application and a refresh of the same quote after we won the grant.

See that dark patch below the southern cross? That's the (relatively close) Coalsack Nebula - interstellar gas blocking starlight like a fog. Even the dark bits are filled with interesting stuff.

The Coalsack and other dark regions are gasses blocking the light from the rest of the Milky way. It is relatively close in cosmological terms. It also forms part of the "emu in the sky", an important constellation for first nations peoples. I did remember something from high school astronomy!

It's amazing how much the coalsack nebular (the dark patch to the lower right of the sourthern cross) is apparent in this photo! The Carina Nebula is the bright smudge at the top, a supernova remnant (the kind of event we are made from and wouldn't exist without, just to put us in perspective)

If you really want to go down the rabbit hole, look up how wind speed, direction and gust is determined according to WMO standards. IIRC gust is the highest rolling three second average speed over the last ten minutes, but it's only gusting if it's 10 knots or more than the ten minute average speed.

Rainfall always gets people, it too is read and reset at 9am and recorded against the day of measurement (even though most of the interval occurred the previous day), yet most people find it more relatable if you say how much it rained since midnight.

There may be a difference between how the forecast is represented in the app vs how and where the observations are taken. Observed min and max for climate data is read and reset at 9am where a station is located, but the computer model can spit out a forecast for whenever and wherever is desired.

We started looking at replacing our aging server at the marine rescue base. Last year it was going to be around $10k with basic warranty/support options. We won a grant and proceeded to get an updated quote... now $130k... for the same specs, due to the "demand for AI". That is insane.

With coordination with a lifeboat or other radio base and their RDF, we can triangulate transmissions to a degree of accuracy.
020
Lee Ryman @leeryman.bsky.social · 27/09/2025
Apart from when those in distress cannot communicate their location, the RDF is invaluable in sanity checking a reported position, as people in distress can inadvertently use their GPS incorrectly, such as reading the cursor position instead of ownship position.
110
Lee Ryman @leeryman.bsky.social · 27/09/2025
The resolution (coordinates) from RCC or decoded by the RDF will get you within 2km (non-GNSS EPIRB) or 100m (GNSS EPIRB). From there the lifeboats will use RDFs tuned to the 121.5MHz homing signal and mk.1 eyeballs to locate the beacon. Swell, headlands and coves can make this more challenging.
100
Lee Ryman @leeryman.bsky.social · 27/09/2025
Typically we would not scan for EPIRBs unless we are aware of a nearby activation or have been asked by the Water Police or AMSA Rescue Coordination Centre. Most of the time we will receive a beacon resolution from them first. Nevertheless it is a useful tool that can confirm a nearby activation.

This is the Rhotheta RT-500-M VHF & EPIRB Radio Direction Finder. It is capable of DF'ing and decoding the uplink signal from EPIRBs (if within range). It uses the more modern pseudo-Doppler technique which is very fast and accurate. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doppler...

Qui... Less than busy at the marine rescue radio base this evening. Got plenty of IT admin work and updates to an equipment training manual to do.
Inside the Port Stephens Marine Rescue Ops Room. Three operator stations, each with a touchscreen Radio-over-IP and ops PC, Cisco CP-8851 VoIP phone, a choice of desk pedestal mic or headset. Other equipment includes a Surf Life Saving handheld transceiver, backup VHF DSC Marine radio, backup Marine Rescue Discrete Communications Network (DCN), 27MHZ Marine radio, Rhotheta VHF/EPIRB Radio Direction Finder, Koden 27Mhz Radio Direction Finder, Medical Alert Receiver, NTP PoE Clock, and an old school barometer.

Sat down at one of the ops stations at the marine rescue base yesterday morning at 6am, only to see a possum exit the roof of the 1872 cottage, and walk across the sunshade to a tree. Took a photo and sent it to facilities officer, for him to complain they only just ejected one a week ago.

Another 2 hours trying to find the download for the policy template for Notepad. Finally found it in some random .cab file on the MS website. Installed it. Literally the only setting it offered was to disable Copilot. Microsoft engineers, are you okay?

New PCs for rescue base. Spent four hours trying to turn off all the copilot integration on windows 11, because didn't want the possibility of search & rescue incident details getting somehow into the cloud. Then opened up notepad and found an additional policy was needed to turn it off in it too.

And are incapable of self assessment. LLMs produce mistakes but never learn from them. Unfortunately this also applies to those who rely on them. They are not AI and I'm not convinced we aren't a very long way before they exhibit more utility than they cost.

I learn through patterns and visualisation. My partner has ADHD and has to learn very differently, more creative doing. It would be amazing if kids were given different strategies early in education to suit their own style, and conditions affecting learning were identified as a part of the process.

Lee Ryman @leeryman.bsky.social · 22/08/2025
I think it's really important to understand that we all learn differently. It would be amazing if somewhere during primary school we are taught to recognise how we individually learn and how we might best structure our study to best attain skills for life and our personal focus.

Can't sing enough praise for the nurses, doctors and facilities at the local Tomaree Hospital, after visiting the ED tonight for my partner. I only wish their staffing levels were better funded. They look overworked, and it always seems like they have to import doctors from the central coast.
