If you're looking for reps, most ill want to see at least a couple to know they can trust the quality and establish you as a generator though some reps will say that one great actionable script is all you need. Producers are all about the script so it's just getting them one that's right 4 them!

I was so inspired by recent spec & pitch sales (not to mention by Sinners' performance in the box office) that I decided to make it the focus of my free screenwriting talk this weekend. Lots to talk about! Hope u can make it! #scriptsky #screenwriting www.eventbrite.com/e/1338945846...

So unfortunately I got the following clarification from someone very much in the know: Of the 2,500 scripts entered into The Nicholl through The Black List, TBL will recommend 25 scripts in total. Other programs such as film schools and festivals will be invited to recommend 2 scripts in total.

230

Lee Jessup @leejessup.bsky.social · 06/05/2025

There are still plenty of other worthy competitions and platforms out there: Final Draft's Big Break contest. Script Pipeline. Austin Film Fest. There are others that have already closed. Also, ISA and other platforms and organizations that can help your work get noticed.

140

Lee Jessup @leejessup.bsky.social · 06/05/2025

That would be... incredibly disappointing. It would also mean that if The Nicholl is taking 25 scripts from TBL, and 2 scripts from schools and fests, they have effectively eliminated the quarterfinals and are judging from a pool of... 100 scripts? I sincerely hope that's not the case!

120

Lee Jessup @leejessup.bsky.social · 06/05/2025

Unfortunately, I have no insight into how decisions were made. I do hope that they're listening to the "writer on the street" and opening up their bubble a bit, if there was one.

010

Lee Jessup @leejessup.bsky.social · 06/05/2025

Honestly, I feel terrible! There are writers reaching out to me for answers, and I wish I had more to give them! We are all just trying to read the tealeaves; I also tend to be an optimist, so here's hoping that our worst suspicions do not come true!

020

Lee Jessup @leejessup.bsky.social · 05/05/2025

I think that the 25 are in addition to the initial 2500? If I'm reading it right, there are 2,500 submissions and then 25 recommendations from The Black List? Or... so I hope?

Lee Jessup @leejessup.bsky.social · 01/05/2025

With Coverfly closing its doors this summer a lot of writers are scratching their heads as to why this happened and whether other brands, like Final Draft and its contest, are safe. Having worked with FD and Coverfly for years... here are my 2 cents. #scriptsky #screenwriting youtu.be/2yA1cVl3XgA

Thank you so much for chiming in and providing these clarifications!

110

Lee Jessup @leejessup.bsky.social · 27/03/2025

it's a challenge, for sure. It seems that now you have to qualify to submit to the Nicholl where before, as with every other competition, you could just submit to the Nicholl.

020

Lee Jessup @leejessup.bsky.social · 27/03/2025

I hear you! While I totally get that there might be business justifications here that we are just not privy too, I also fully get why writers are... not loving this.

120

Lee Jessup @leejessup.bsky.social · 27/03/2025

Unfortunately it becomes a bit of a pay-to-play situation (which all competitions are in some way but still) with a much more complex barrier to entry.

Screencraft, LaunchPad and TSL 360 shuttering can feel like an avenue for exposure of your work can feel like it was shut off, but there are still plenty of great comps/fellowships out there. Here are a few I have my eye on in Feb. #screenwriting #scriptsky youtu.be/50szbVR089M

Thanks for the update! To my knowledge, Indie Film Hustle is NOT under the Industry Arts banner, which owned WeScreenplay, TSL360, Launch Pad and the rest... Hope they find ways to connect writers with those readers that have been helpful to them in the past.

110

Lee Jessup @leejessup.bsky.social · 20/02/2025

A slew of my writers - both working and emerging - have used them quite successfully. Definitely sad to see them go, but I'm sure those readers will pop up elsewhere in time!

010

Lee Jessup @leejessup.bsky.social · 20/02/2025

Correct - that one, unfortunately, is gone as well. Unfortunately that information was not yet available when the video was recorded. Things are moving fast...
